| Samenvatting | Homoseksualiteit en migratie: die combinatie is een heet hangijzer in politiek, samenleving en wetenschap. Toch bestaat er in Europa weinig onderzoek hierover. Dit boek wenst een bijdrage te leveren aan een groeiende interesse naar de beleving van homoseksualiteit bij etnische minderheden, met nadruk op seksuele migratie. In het eerste deel van het boek gaat Wim Peumans in een etnografische studie na waarom de geïnterviewde homoseksuele en lesbische migranten uit hun land van herkomst naar België kwamen en welke rol hun seksualiteit in de migratiebeslissing speelde. Daarnaast bekijkt hij wat de invloed van migratie was op hun seksualiteitsbeleving en de manieren waarmee ze omgingen met hun gestigmatiseerde identiteit in het land van aankomst. Aan de hand van alle verhalen krijgt de lezer zo een beter inzicht in de levens van homoseksuele en lesbische migranten. In het tweede deel van het boek reageren binnen- en buitenlandse academici en holebi-activisten op het onderzoek. Onderwerpen zijn onder meer een kritisch overzicht van de studie naar islam en homoseksualiteit, de situatie van tweede generatie homo's en lesbiennes in Nederland, en de behandeling van homoseksualiteit in Belgisch en Europees vreemdelingenrecht en in de asielprocedure. | |

| Samenvatting | In the Czech Republic, penile plethysmography (also known as phallometry or PPG) continues to be used on asylum seekers to confirm their homosexuality. The rationale for the use of this method, and its counterpart for women, vaginal photoplethysmography (VPG), is that they purportedly provide an accurate assessment of applicants' sexual response. In the asylum context, plethysmography is believed to obviate the need for an interview. This paper will describe the mechanics of the PPG and VPG tests, the contexts in which they have been applied, the extent to which legal bodies have accepted them, and the legal and ethical consequences of utilizing these examinations in the context of RSD. From this discussion, it will be evident that this methodology not only constitutes a violation of the human rights of LGBTI individuals, but that it is scientifically unreliable, unethical, and inappropriate for use in the determination of the sexual orientation of persons seeking refugee protection. | |

| Samenvatting | Due to the discrimination and abuse they experience, many LGBTI people, including adolescents, flee their home countries and seek protection abroad. The multiple vulnerabilities that LGBTI refugees (applicable to asylum-seekers and, depending on the context, stateless and other persons and groups of concern to UNHCR) may face in all stages of the displacement cycle is an increasing protection concern. It is important for UNHCR to ensure that the rights of LGBTI persons of concern to the Office are met without discrimination. This places an onus on offices to develop a thorough understanding of the circumstances of LGBTI persons under their care. This note provides staff with guidance on a range of issues when working to meet these responsibilities. | |
