Titel: Children's Views of Family Relationships in Lesbian-Led Families
Auteur Fiona Taskera, Julia Granville.
Impressum Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 7 (2011) 1/2 (jan-apr), p. 182-199.
Samenvatting We present a new genogram technique for exploring children's conceptualization of family membership: the Apple Tree Family (ATF). The ATF measure was used to investigate how children born to lesbian mothers via donor insemination (DI) described the composition of their family. Data were gathered from 17 children (age 4 to 11 years old) from 15 lesbian-led households on inclusion of family members on the ATF and the Kinetic Family Drawing Test (KFDT) (Burns & Kaufman, 1971). Also, data on children's inclusion of family members on the ATF were compared with family composition as described by adult family members in a prior interview. Child and adult family members tended to concur on who was in their family, depicting a core unit surrounded by a wider family network that included non-biological and biological kin. In comparison to the KFDT, the ATF enabled children to depict a greater number of family members in a wider variety of non-traditional family relationships. We propose that the ATF is useful as a research and clinical tool for working with the children of GLBTQ parents. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Titel: Lesbian mothers' constructions of the division of paid and unpaid labor
Auteur Jordan B. Downing.
Impressum Feminism and Psychology, 21 (2011) 1 (feb), p. 100-120.
Samenvatting Do lesbian couples resist the (re)gendering of divisions of paid and unpaid labor within the context of biological and nonbiological parenting? In this study we explore how primarily Caucasian, North American lesbian mothers of three-and-a-half-year-old children construct divisions of paid and unpaid labor. We analyze 30 lesbian couples' narrative constructions of their labor arrangements, examining the ways in which they both transgress and accept traditionally masculine and feminine gendering. At the same time that biological mothers and nonbiological mothers often described differences in their contributions to paid and unpaid labor, they rarely invoked biology as a salient factor in explaining their work/family roles. Our analysis suggests that the 'egalitarian ethic' of lesbian women is an over-simplification of the multiple ways that women develop their divisions of labor.

Titel: Through the lens of hetero-normative assumptions : re-thinking attitudes towards gay parenting
Auteur Jarred Pennington, Tess Knight.
Impressum Culture, Health and Sexuality, 13 (2011) 1 (jan), p. 59-72.
Samenvatting In this study we explored the attitudes and beliefs of nine heterosexual adults towards gay male and female couples parenting children. We conceptualised participants' perceptions as one primary lens through which gay parenting is viewed. Based on the narratives provided, this lens comprised hetero-normative, homophobic or heterosexist assumptions and coloured the way in which participants perceived aspects of the concept of gay couples parenting children. At times, participants attempted to adjust their primary lens and adopt different views that initially suggested ambivalence and sometimes contradictory positions. Despite the range of attitudes and assumptions about same-sex parenting, consensus over the potential negative developmental impact on children raised by same-sex parents remained evident. Evidence suggests that same-sex parenting is already a reality in Westernised nations and has little or no bearing on the sexual orientation of children. However, concern that children be brought up with every opportunity to 'become' heterosexual, whether they are the product of same-sex or opposite-sex parents, remains evident.

Titel: Working-class lesbian parents' emotional engagement with their children's education Intersections of class and sexuality
Auteur Catherine Ann Nixon.
Impressum Sexualities, 14 (2011) 1 (feb), p. 79-99.
Samenvatting This article examines intersections of class and sexuality in lesbian parents' educational practices, specifically their emotional engagements with their children's education. This research draws on Bourdieu's (1986b) concept of capitals and current research that utilizes the concept of 'emotional capital', in theorizing mothers' emotional investments in their children's education. Studies of working-class lesbians' experiences of marginalization within education relevant to this investigation are also consulted. Based on qualitative data, this article examines ways in which working-class lesbian parents' negative experiences of school are used as emotional resources in three key ways; to protect their children from bullying, to teach their children life skills and to promote values of equality and acceptance. I suggest that in utilizing the concept of 'emotional capital', this work begins to make sense of the subjective and material realities of educational involvement for working-class lesbian parents.
