Samenvatting |
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which "lesbian gender," power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality. Luchtig halen twee vrouwen van boven de tachtig, de Amerikaanse Edie en de van oorsprong Amsterdamse Thea, herinneringen op over hun relatie die begon in New York in de vroege jaren '60. Ze mijmeren over de nacht waarin ze elkaar ontmoetten en hoe ze samen urenlang dansten. "We dansten zo lang, dat ik er een gat in mijn kous aan overhield", zegt Edie. Ondanks het feit dat hun relatie begon in een tijd waarin vrouwen dansten met hun jassen aan, omdat ze bij een eventuele inval snel weg moesten kunnen komen, slaagden zij erin bij elkaar te blijven. De voortdurende confrontatie met homofobie, zowel in hun families als op het werk, en de verlamming waardoor Thea in een rolstoel belandt, maakten hun band alleen maar sterker. Als de doktoren vertellen dat Thea minder dan een jaar te leven heeft, vliegen Edie en Thea naar Canada om na 42 jaar hun 'Very Long Engagement' om te zetten in een huwelijk. |

We investigated whether motivation for same-sex sexual contact was related to mid-cycle peaks in estrogen levels (typically associated with ovulation) among women with consistent versus inconsistent patterns of same-sex sexuality. Twenty women (M age = 30 years), all of whom have been providing data on their sexual behavior and identities since 1995, completed daily diaries assessing sexual motivation and provided 10 days of salivary estrogen samples. During the 3 consecutive days on which estrogen levels peaked, women who had consistently identified as lesbian since 1995 (n = 5) showed increased motivation for sexual contact with women. This change in same-sex motivation was significantly smaller among women who consistently identified as bisexual (n = 7) and women who had given up their lesbian or bisexual identities at some point since 1995 (n = 8). Women who ascribed a role for "choice" in their same-sex sexuality also showed smaller increases in same-sex motivation. The findings suggest that women with consistent versus inconsistent patterns of same-sex sexuality might be experiencing different types of same-sex desires influenced by different factors. |
