Summary |
Tetra is an "out" middle school student. She identifies as a "lesbian," a "tomboy," "butch," an "oddball," and a "geek." These identifications could place her as a marginalized and alienated student. However, Tetra was a successful student, both socially and academically. At her diverse public middle school, Tetra was privileged in her Whiteness and economic class status. Tetra's story is the tale of how one lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender student used her privilege and power to counteract the negative impact of homophobia she faced at school. She was an outsider at school, and she used this oppositional identity for both survival and to maintain her own privilege. Tetra speaks to how we as educators can help students become active agents in handling their marginalizations and confronting their own race and class-based privilege. Summary |
This study discusses student responses to curriculum taught by the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles to choral students in local high schools. The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles's A-LIVE Music Project brings live music and standards-driven curriculum to high school youth with the express purpose of teaching content in innovative ways and encouraging students to think critically and reflect personally. This study summarizes open-ended qualitative questions from pre- and post-assessment surveys, and investigates how students bring to school their constructed meanings of gender, race, sexuality, and class, and how the implementation of the Project changed students' views of misogyny, racism, homophobia, and classism. |
Summary |
This meta-synthesis of empirical and nonempirical literature analyzed 24 journal articles and book chapters that addressed the intersection of disability, [homo]sexuality, and gender identity/expression in P-12 schools, colleges and universities, supported living programs, and other educational and social contexts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The articles and chapters emphasized the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth with disabilities - culturally, linguistically, sexually, and in terms of abilities, disabilities, and related service needs - while noting that all (or certainly most) lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth with disabilities possess multiple stigmatized identities as sexual/gender minorities and young people with disabilities. Summary |
This article scrutinizes the efforts of a media advocacy group to redress the stigma of youth homosexuality among United States youth: a report published in 2003 by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called, "How Youth Media Can Help Combat Homophobia Among American Teenagers." The report, authored by Rodger Streitmatter, concluded that media makers should be encouraged to feature morally-upstanding lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth who struggled to accept their sexuality. Arguing that the report's conclusion concurs with a "politics of assimilation," which ultimately works against the aims of gay rights, an alternative approach is offered through this article, critical media literacy, for challenging youth homophobia. Summary |
When the first teen novel featuring gay characters, "I'll Get There. It better Be Worth the Trip" by John Donovan, was published in 1969, the Stonewall Riots starting the gay rights movement had not yet taken place. How has GLBT young adult literature evolved over the years? |
