Bi Now, Gay Later : Implicit and Explicit Binegativity Among Irish University Students  / Todd G. Morrison, Ronan Harrington, Daragh T. McDermott.

Journal of Bisexuality, 10 (2010) 3 (july-sep), p. 211-232
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 10 (2010) 3 (july-sep), p. 211-232
samenvatting: To date, no assessment of explicit attitudes toward bisexual men and women has occurred in the Republic of Ireland. Further, there are no published studies examining implicit attitudes toward this group. The current research addressed these omissions by investigating bi-negativity, at explicit and implicit levels, within an Irish context. Various pen-and-paper measures were administered to 208 undergraduate students (170 females) enrolled in 2nd- and 3rd-year psychology courses at a large university in Western Ireland. Among the most pertinent findings: explicit binegativity was somewhat prevalent within the sample, overall implicit attitudes reflected a bias toward heterosexuals and against bisexuals, men evidenced greater levels of explicit bi-negativity than women and no support was obtained for a model of cognitive consistency, which aims to articulate the various conditions in which implicit and explicit attitudes are intercorrelated. Limitations of the current study and directions for future research are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Bi : Notes for a Bisexual Revolution  /

samenvatting: Depicted as duplicitous, traitorous, and promiscuous, bisexuality has long been suspected, marginalized, and rejected by both straight and gay communities alike. Bi takes a long overdue, comprehensive look at bisexual politics - from the issues surrounding biphobia/monosexism, feminism, and transgenderism to the practice of labeling those who identify as bi as either "too bisexual" (promiscuous and incapable of fidelity) or "not bisexual enough" (not actively engaging romantically or sexually with people of at least two different genders). In this forward-thinking and eye-opening book, feminist bisexual and genderqueer activist Shiri Eisner takes readers on a journey through the many aspects of the meanings and politics of bisexuality, specifically highlighting how bisexuality can open up new and exciting ways of challenging social convention. Informed by feminist, transgender, and queer theory, as well as politics and activism, Bi is a radical manifesto for a group that has been too frequently silenced, erased, and denied?and a starting point from which to launch a bisexual revolution.

Reflections About Bisexuality and the Journal of Bisexuality  / Mickey Eliason, John P. Elia.

Journal of Bisexuality, 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 412-419
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 412-419
samenvatting: In this reflection, the authors consider their previous work related to bisexuality in their scholarship and teaching and within a historical context. Although they have had some very different life circumstances and taught in very different institutions, the experiences they had with biphobia and stereotypes about bisexuality have been remarkably similar. They end with some thoughts on the future of the field, urging that a more serious consideration of intersectionality will move knowledge forward in a more positive way than focusing on sexual identities in isolation. The Biphobia Scale a Decade Later: Reflections and Additions  / Patrick S. Mulick, Lester W. Wright Jr.

Journal of Bisexuality, 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 453-457
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 453-457
samenvatting: Biphobia, which has been defined as negative attitudes about bisexuality and bisexual individuals, is a psychological construct that is, at present, not well understood. Ochs described the denigration that bisexual individuals face as 'double discrimination,' which she defined as discrimination from both heterosexual and homosexual communities. A 30-item instrument, the Biphobia Scale, was developed to measure negative cognitions, affects and behaviors regarding bisexuality and bisexual individuals. The instrument has provided empirical support for the existence of the construct of biphobia and suggests that it exists in the heterosexual and homosexual communities. The results support the theory that bisexual individuals are subjected to 'double discrimination.' [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

An Update and Reflections on Fear of and Discrimination Against Bisexuals, Homosexuals, and Individuals with AIDS  / Lester W. Wright Jr., Anthony G. Bonita, Patrick S. Mulick.

Journal of Bisexuality, 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 458-464
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 458-464
samenvatting: This study explored the relationship between biphobia, homophobia, AIDS phobia, an individual's sexual opinions and the orientation of an individual's past sexual behaviors and fantasies. Participants (N = 224) completed five self-report measures designed to specifically assess these psychological constructs. There were statistically significant correlations between the participants' fear and discrimination of sexual minorities and individuals with AIDS. Additionally, the results suggest that more conservative views regarding sexuality are associated with higher levels of biphobia and homophobia. Finally, past sexual fantasies, which were more exclusively gay/lesbian in content, were associated with lower levels of erotophobia, biphobia and homophobia.
