samenvatting: This article explores the relation between sexuality and nationalism in contemporary Lithuania. It examines the extent to which sexual minorities are included in the nation, discussing the first Lithuanian gay pride and legislation discouraging sexual diversity. It argues that events concerning lesbian and gay oppression and emancipation should be read in a political and cultural context in which the national self is contested and reinvented. Therefore, it analyses the anti-homosexual and nationalist discourse and looks into how sexuality issues are used to articulate the national self within the context of European integration. It suggests that allowing sexual minorities' visibility but strictly regulating it within the nation-space is the way how contemporary Eastern European nationalism navigates between lesbian and gay demands for sexual citizenship and the EU's pressure for sexual liberalism.

samenvatting: Homoseksualiteit was in de Sovjet-Unie (en het Rusland) van de 20e eeuw gecriminaliseerd van 1934 tot 1993. Doorheen de decennia werden homo?s als zondaars, misdadigers en geestelijk zieken beschouwd. Ook al was homoseksualiteit in 2006 al dertien jaar legaal? en was het reeds zeven jaar geschrapt van de lijst van psychische aandoeningen, toch werd nog heftig gereageerd op een gay festival en parade in mei 2006. De gay parade van mei 2006 werd verboden door de toenmalige (en huidige) burgemeester van Moskou, Jurij Lutkov, en antihomogevoelens werden alom geuit. Deze thesis richt zich op het discours van deze antihomoseksuele uitingen in geschreven teksten. Welke groepen voerden zo een discours en hoe kan hun taalgebruik getypeerd worden? Hoe verliep het discours in de ogenschijnlijk objectieve media?

samenvatting: Op 26 juni 1982 was Amersfoort het toneel van een ongekende uitbarsting van antihomoseksuele sentimenten. Lokale jongeren botsten met de homodemonstranten van Roze Zaterdag. De aanwezige demonstranten bleven met een gevoel van weerloosheid en vernedering achter. Amersfoort toonde aan dat het met de publieke manifestatie van homoseksualiteit nog niet zo goed gesteld was. Het betekende ook het begin van een bewustwordingsproces. Antihomoseksueel geweld werd serieuzer genomen en ook de overheid begon langzaam in te zien dat vrijelijk in de openbaarheid kunnen leven een essentieel onderdeel is van volwaardig burgerschap. Roze Zaterdag 1982 werd dus ook een katalysator voor verandering en emancipatie van de homobeweging in de publieke ruimte. Dit is een onderzoek naar welke rol Roze Zaterdag 1982 heeft gespeeld in de totstandkoming van de huidige situatie: een Nederland waarin er plaats is voor homoseksualiteit in de publieke ruimte. Waarbij wordt gekeken hoe de ontwikkeling van openlijke manifestatie van homoseksualiteit in Nederland is verlopen. Hoe werd er in de tijd van Roze Zaterdag 1982 gereageerd op homoseksualiteit in de publieke ruimte? Amersfoort is hiervoor een mooi beginpunt. Het symboliseert een moment in de tijd en ruimte waar die openlijke manifestatie van een groep homoseksuele mensen keihard afgestraft werd. Zichtbaarheid kon dus leiden tot een heftige tegenreactie. Dit heeft de homoseksuele bevolking van Nederland niet terug in de kast geduwd. Wat heeft het wel opgeleverd?

samenvatting: The yearly celebration of (LGBTQ+) Pride has changed from being a remembrance of socio-political emancipation to an event that is easily commercialized by the corporate world. Companies that engage in this event are prone to be accused of commodifying LGBTQ+ individuals (also known as pinkwashing). Hence, companies need to engage in Pride in a way that is sincere toward LGBTQ+ individuals. As LGBTQ+ consumers are often studied using quantitative methods, they are usually approached from a company's point of view, as well as being homogenized as a target audience. Therefore, this study makes use of a qualitative approach, to understand how LGBTQ+ individuals perceive corporate engagement in Pride. To explore this, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings show that LGBTQ+ individuals perceive companies' engagement in Pride as being beneficial for the normalization of LGBTQ+ identities. Furthermore, the strategic motives of companies to partake in the event are acknowledged and largely understood, as long as companies have additional internal motives behind their engagement. Because it is hard to estimate whether companies are merely being strategic during Pride or whether they are intrinsically motivated as well, there is uncertainty about their intentions. By 1) reflecting on the LGBTQ+ inclusivity in their internal culture, 2) being consistent toward LGBTQ+ individuals in their communication throughout the year and 3) pro-actively taking on some sort of action during Pride that is aimed at making a change for LGBTQ+ individuals, companies can decrease this uncertainty. The findings are used to link to current understandings of the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Political Advocacy (CPA), as well as to criticize the current perceptions of pinkwashing.
