High Levels of Same-Sex Experiences in the Netherlands : Prevalences of Same-Sex Experiences in Historical and International Perspective  / Lisette Kuyper, Ine Vanwesenbeeck.

Journal of Homosexuality, 56 (2009) 8 (nov), p. 993-1010
source: Journal of Homosexuality year: 56 (2009) 8 (nov), p. 993-1010
resume: Some authors suggest that the public stance toward homosexuality can influence the prevalence of same-sex experiences (e.g., Butler, 2005). Since the Dutch stance toward homosexuality has become more positive during the last decades, it was hypothesized that the current Dutch prevalences of same-sex experiences are higher than in other times and countries. This hypothesis was investigated using the data of a recent Dutch population study, and comparing these results to those from previous and international studies. The current Dutch figures were indeed higher than recent figures from other countries. Among women, the recent figures were also higher than those found in previous Dutch studies. The prevalence of same-sex experiences among Dutch males stayed the same. These results and the methodological aspects of the study are discussed. Loneliness Among Older Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults : The Role of Minority Stress  / Lisette Kuyper, Tineke Fokkema.

Archives of Sexual Behavior, 39 (2010) 5 (sep), p. 1171-1180
source: Archives of Sexual Behavior year: 39 (2010) 5 (sep), p. 1171-1180
resume: Past research has consistently found that aging lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (LGBs) are more apt to suffer from loneliness than their heterosexual counterparts. Data from the 2002 Gay Autumn survey (N = 122) were used to find out whether minority stress relates to higher levels of loneliness among older LGB adults in the Netherlands. We examined five minority stress factors: external objective stressful events, expectations of those events, internalized homonegativity, hiding and concealment of one?s LGB identity, and ameliorating processes. The results showed that greater insight into loneliness among older LGB adults was obtained when minority stress factors were considered. Older LGB adults who had experienced negative reactions, as well as aging LGBs who expected those reactions, had the highest levels of loneliness. Having an LGB social network buffered against the impact of minority stress. These minority stress processes added to the variance already explained by general factors that influenced levels of loneliness (partner relationships, general social network, physical health, and self-esteem). Interventions aimed at decreasing feelings of loneliness among older LGBs should be focused on decreasing societal homonegativity (to decrease the amount of negative and prejudiced reactions) and on the enhancement of social activities for LGB elderly.

Sexual orientation and health : general and minority stress factors explaining health differences between lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual individuals  / door Lisette Silvana Kuyper.

edition: [S.l. : s.n.], 2011 - iii, 184 bl.: ill.
subjects:
theme:
  1. gezondheid
  2. homoseksualiteit

Towards Tolerance : Exploring changes and explaining differences in attitudes towards homosexuality in Europe  /

Lisette Kuyper, Jurjen Iedema, Saskia Keuzenkamp.Den Haag: Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau [SCP], 2013 - 88 p.
edition: Den Haag: Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau [SCP], 2013 - 88 p.
annotation: This report was compiled at the request of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW).

resume: Across Europe, public attitudes towards lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) individuals range from broad tolerance to widespread rejection. Attitudes towards homosexuality are more than mere individual opinions, but form part of the social and political structures which foster or hinder the equality and emancipation of LGB citizens. This report addresses the issues behind todays differences in tolerance. Have attitudes towards homosexuality changed over the past 30 years? Are there European countries where tolerance is increasing, decreasing, or not changing at all? What explains differences in attitudes? Can differences be attributed to levels of income or education, and does religion play a major role? Are tolerant attitudes found in countries with high levels of gender equality? This report shows that Europe is moving towards more tolerance. However, different countries are moving at a very different pace and from very different starting positions. In addition, the biggest changes seem to have taken place between 1990 and 1999 and did not persist into the new millennium. Differences are related to other values, levels of income and income inequality, educational attainment, religious factors, degree of urbanization, EU membership and political systems, and to links with civil society and LGB movements.

Acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in the Netherlands 2013  /

Saskia Keuzenkamp en Lisette Kuyper.Den Haag: Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau [SCP], 2013 - 35 p.

resume: The Dutch government is committed to equal rights for and social acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals, and also to securing their acceptance in Dutch society. Since social acceptance is one of the most important goals of the gay emancipation policy, at the request of the Minister of Education, Culture and Science the Netherlands Institute for Social Research/SCP publishes a concise report every two years on the current situation. The present edition also looks for the first time at the social acceptance of bisexuals and transgenders. The conclusion is that acceptance in the general population is continuing to increase, but still lags behind in certain religious, ethnic and political groups, as does the acceptance of certain categories of people (e.g. people who do not behave in accordance with what is expected of members of their sex).
