samenvatting: From invisible to pathological, the literary, cultural, and theoretical representations of male bisexuality have been almost uniformly negative. Bisexual Men in Culture and Society provides a clear, rational analysis of the negative stereotypes and the underlying reasons for them.

Bisexual Spaces : A Geography of Sexuality and Gender  /

samenvatting: A largely unexplored area, this is an innovative and original examination of bisexual spaces as places that are defined by both geographical boundaries and cultural significance. Hemmings applies the ideas of queer theory as well as social and cultural geography in her fascinating investigation into the spaces and places of bisexual life. Specifically focusing on Northhampton, MA and San Francisco, she draws on interviews with community members and the town histories showing how and why they have developed into safe places for gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities and in the process provides a new and provocative understanding of bisexual life. By going beyond simplistic definitions of bisexuality, Hemmings shows us that the story of bisexuality is much more complicated than as a sexual middle ground.

Bisexual women in the twenty-first century  /

samenvatting: Bisexual Women in the Twenty-First Century reflects the ?brave new world? of bisexual women's lives through an eclectic collection of articles that typifies an ongoing feminist process of theory grounded in life experience. The book's broad scope addresses a ?world? created in response to lesbian-feminism, homophobia within the mainstream women?s movement, and sexism within the gay rights movement. The book includes Carol Queen's memoirs of the swinging lesbian scene in the 1970s, a critical examination of Alice Walker's novel The Temple of My Familiar, and a look back at the controversy surrounding bisexual inclusion in the Northampton Lesbian and Gay Pride March in Massachusetts in the early 90s. Previous groundbreaking work on bisexuality had to focus on breaking the silence around bisexual invisibility. This collection works from that foundation to explore the complexities and histories of bisexual women's lives.

samenvatting: Women and Bisexuality: A Global Perspective reflects the growing contribution bisexuals, and especially bisexual women, make to queer culture on an international level. This unique book presents a collection of thoughtful essays, studies, and reviews that combine to help develop a language that reflects the reality of bisexuality from a feminine/feminist viewpoint. Authors map the inroads made by bisexual studies into conventional disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, health, literature, film, history, and biography, and analyze the situations of bisexual women in areas as diverse as France, North America, Germany, Australia, and Africa.

Look Both Ways : Bisexual Politics  /

Jennifer Baumgardner.New York, NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007 - 244 p.
uitgave: New York, NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007 - 244 p.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: For author and activist Jennifer Baumgardner, bisexuality has always been more than the "sexual non-preference of the '90s." In "Look Both Ways", Baumgardner takes a close look at the growing visibility of gay and bisexual characters, performers, and issues on the national cultural stage. Despite the prevalence of bisexuality among Generation X and Y women, she finds that it continues to be marginalized by both gay and straight cultures, and dismissed either as a phase or a cop-out.With intimacy and humour, Baumgardner discusses her own experience as a bisexual, and the struggle she's undergone to reconcile the privilege she's garnered as a woman who is perceived as straight and the empowerment and satisfaction she's derived from her relationships with women. That Baumgardner argues have bridged feminist aims with those of the gay rights movement. "Look Both Ways" is a compelling and current study in bisexual lives lived secretly and openly, and an exploration of the lessons learned by writers, artists, and activists who have refused the either/or paradigm defended by both gay and straight communities.

The Politics of Passion : Women's Sexual Culture in the Afro-Surinamese Diaspora  /

Gloria Wekker.New York, NY: Columbia University Press, 2006 - xvi, 313 p.
uitgave: New York, NY: Columbia University Press, 2006 - xvi, 313 p.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: "The Politics of Passion" centers on an old institution among the Afro-Surinamese working class in which women have multiple sexual relationships with both men and women. These women reject marriage because of the bonds of dependency it fosters, preferring to create their own families of kin, lovers, and children. Gloria Wekker analyzes this phenomenon, known as mati work, as she vividly describes the lives of Afro-Surinamese women. She gives an account of women's sexuality that is not limited to either heterosexuality or same-sex sexuality. Her work offers new perspectives on black women's sexuality, the lives of Caribbean women, transnational gay and lesbian movements, and an Afro-Surinamese tradition that challenges conventional Western notions of marriage, gender, and sexuality. By foregrounding the voices of Afro-Surinamese women, Wekker illuminates these women's daily lives in light of the changes occurring in Surinamese society. She also considers the historical, religious, psychological, economic, linguistic, cultural, and political elements that have shaped their lives. The book concludes with stories of women who have migrated to the Netherlands, where they have created new, vibrant mati communities.

Bisexuality in the United States : A Social Science Reader  /

[ed. by] Paula C. Rodríguez Rust.New York, NY: Columbia University Press, cop. 2000 - xxi, 659 p.
uitgave: New York, NY: Columbia University Press, cop. 2000 - xxi, 659 p.
annotatie: Bibliogr. passim.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: For years bisexuality was considered merely a transition stage between a person's presumed sexuality, whether heterosexual or homosexual, and their 'true' sexuality. Bisexuality was therefore regarded with suspicion by the lesbian and gay community and with contempt by the 'straight' world. The study and understanding of bisexuality has surpassed the stereotyped representations of previous eras (e.g., Basic Instinct), but few books attempts seriously to engage the subject as a whole. Paula Rust rectifies the absence in the literature by presenting the first interdisciplinary and comprehensive review of social scientific research and theory about bisexuality.

Sexual fluidity : Understanding women's love and desire  /

Lisa M. Diamond.Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2008 - 352 p.
uitgave: Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2008 - 352 p.
annotatie: Finalist, 2008 Independent Publisher Book Awards, Gay/Lesbian Category.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Is love "blind" when it comes to gender? For women, it just might be. This book offers a radical new understanding of the context-dependent nature of female sexuality. Lisa Diamond argues that for some women, love and desire are not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual but fluid, changing as women move through the stages of life, various social groups, and, most important, different love relationships.
