resume: A largely unexplored area, this is an innovative and original examination of bisexual spaces as places that are defined by both geographical boundaries and cultural significance. Hemmings applies the ideas of queer theory as well as social and cultural geography in her fascinating investigation into the spaces and places of bisexual life. Specifically focusing on Northhampton, MA and San Francisco, she draws on interviews with community members and the town histories showing how and why they have developed into safe places for gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities and in the process provides a new and provocative understanding of bisexual life. By going beyond simplistic definitions of bisexuality, Hemmings shows us that the story of bisexuality is much more complicated than as a sexual middle ground.

resume: Bisexual Women in the Twenty-First Century reflects the ?brave new world? of bisexual women's lives through an eclectic collection of articles that typifies an ongoing feminist process of theory grounded in life experience. The book's broad scope addresses a ?world? created in response to lesbian-feminism, homophobia within the mainstream women?s movement, and sexism within the gay rights movement. The book includes Carol Queen's memoirs of the swinging lesbian scene in the 1970s, a critical examination of Alice Walker's novel The Temple of My Familiar, and a look back at the controversy surrounding bisexual inclusion in the Northampton Lesbian and Gay Pride March in Massachusetts in the early 90s. Previous groundbreaking work on bisexuality had to focus on breaking the silence around bisexual invisibility. This collection works from that foundation to explore the complexities and histories of bisexual women's lives.

Authors map the inroads made by bisexual studies into conventional disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, health, literature, film, history, and biography, and analyze the situations of bisexual women in areas as diverse as France, North America, Germany, Australia, and Africa.

resume: For author and activist Jennifer Baumgardner, bisexuality has always been more than the "sexual non-preference of the '90s." In "Look Both Ways", Baumgardner takes a close look at the growing visibility of gay and bisexual characters, performers, and issues on the national cultural stage. Despite the prevalence of bisexuality among Generation X and Y women, she finds that it continues to be marginalized by both gay and straight cultures, and dismissed either as a phase or a cop-out.With intimacy and humour, Baumgardner discusses her own experience as a bisexual, and the struggle she's undergone to reconcile the privilege she's garnered as a woman who is perceived as straight and the empowerment and satisfaction she's derived from her relationships with women. That Baumgardner argues have bridged feminist aims with those of the gay rights movement. "Look Both Ways" is a compelling and current study in bisexual lives lived secretly and openly, and an exploration of the lessons learned by writers, artists, and activists who have refused the either/or paradigm defended by both gay and straight communities.

resume: "The Politics of Passion" centers on an old institution among the Afro-Surinamese working class in which women have multiple sexual relationships with both men and women. These women reject marriage because of the bonds of dependency it fosters, preferring to create their own families of kin, lovers, and children. Gloria Wekker analyzes this phenomenon, known as mati work, as she vividly describes the lives of Afro-Surinamese women. She gives an account of women's sexuality that is not limited to either heterosexuality or same-sex sexuality. Her work offers new perspectives on black women's sexuality, the lives of Caribbean women, transnational gay and lesbian movements, and an Afro-Surinamese tradition that challenges conventional Western notions of marriage, gender, and sexuality. By foregrounding the voices of Afro-Surinamese women, Wekker illuminates these women's daily lives in light of the changes occurring in Surinamese society. She also considers the historical, religious, psychological, economic, linguistic, cultural, and political elements that have shaped their lives. The book concludes with stories of women who have migrated to the Netherlands, where they have created new, vibrant mati communities.

resume: For years bisexuality was considered merely a transition stage between a person's presumed sexuality, whether heterosexual or homosexual, and their 'true' sexuality. Bisexuality was therefore regarded with suspicion by the lesbian and gay community and with contempt by the 'straight' world. The study and understanding of bisexuality has surpassed the stereotyped representations of previous eras (e.g., Basic Instinct), but few books attempts seriously to engage the subject as a whole. Paula Rust rectifies the absence in the literature by presenting the first interdisciplinary and comprehensive review of social scientific research and theory about bisexuality.

Lisa Diamond argues that for some women, love and desire are not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual but fluid, changing as women move through the stages of life, various social groups, and, most important, different love relationships.

resume: There are at least five million bisexual people in America, generally invisible to straight society, the gay community, and even to each other. While the vast majority of these five million live within the straight or gay world, there are a few who have formed a community of their own. Bi America: Myths, Truths, and Struggles of an Invisible Community offers an inside look at the American bisexual community and gives an understanding of the special circumstances unique to being bisexual. The book takes the reader to bi community events from picnics, to conferences, to support groups, to performances in order to expose the everyday trials of the bisexual community. Bi America includes very personal stories that let the voice of everyday bisexuals be heard through interviews, the "Bisexual History Project," in which ten bisexual people tell their life stories, and the "Online Support Group," a group of about 75 people who meet in cyberspace to talk about their lives and challenges. The book also includes the findings of a 2002 survey of about 300 bisexual people conducted via the Internet, an appendix that offers a concise list of resources for further study and personal enrichment, and an unabridged transcript of the "Bisexual History Project."

resume: Bisexuality has been explored in increasing numbers of South African novels published since 1994. In a society previously dominated by an either/or mindset, what does this development signify? The innovative 'Somewhere in the Double Rainbow' answers this question by examining a number of these novels in depth, looking at South African literature, the nation and citizenship in a new light. She argues that Damon Galgut's In a Strange Room: Three Journeys portrays bisexual characters in terms of stereotypes; however, other novels, by authors across a range of subject positions, are more open and accepting of sexual fluidity. The ones which the author discusses are Fred Khumalo's Seven Steps to Heaven, Zukiswa Wanner's Men of the South, Zinaid Meeran's Saracen at the Gates and Sarah Lotz's Exhibit A and Tooth and Nailed.

resume: Depicted as duplicitous, traitorous, and promiscuous, bisexuality has long been suspected, marginalized, and rejected by both straight and gay communities alike. Bi takes a long overdue, comprehensive look at bisexual politics - from the issues surrounding biphobia/monosexism, feminism, and transgenderism to the practice of labeling those who identify as bi as either "too bisexual" (promiscuous and incapable of fidelity) or "not bisexual enough" (not actively engaging romantically or sexually with people of at least two different genders). In this forward-thinking and eye-opening book, feminist bisexual and genderqueer activist Shiri Eisner takes readers on a journey through the many aspects of the meanings and politics of bisexuality, specifically highlighting how bisexuality can open up new and exciting ways of challenging social convention. Informed by feminist, transgender, and queer theory, as well as politics and activism, Bi is a radical manifesto for a group that has been too frequently silenced, erased, and denied?and a starting point from which to launch a bisexual revolution.

resume: The B Word explores the ways bisexual fantasy opens a space for "bi-curious" engagement, creating a fluid range of identifications and pleasures. In films as diverse as Brokeback Mountain, The Wedding Crashers, Persona, Chasing Amy, and Mulholland Drive, Maria San Filippo finds that bisexual tropes reveal the workings of our culture's logic of desire. Viewing these and other films through a bisexual lens, which views subjectivity and eroticism as malleable, The B Word transforms understandings of films previously read exclusively as either homosexual or heterosexual. As San Filippo's analysis of the promotion and popular reception of these films reveals, the entertainment industry both exploits and effaces bisexuality in its appeal to diverse audiences.
