Moderators of Sexual Behavior in Gay Men  / David A. Moskowitz, Michael E. Roloff.

Archives of Sexual Behavior, 39 (2010) 4 (aug), p. 950-958
bron: Archives of Sexual Behavior jaargang: 39 (2010) 4 (aug), p. 950-958
samenvatting: We investigated factors that might moderate the association between sexual behavior desires and sexual behavior enactments in gay men. Condom eschewal, number of STIs, HIV serostatus, age, and relationship status were each hypothesized to moderate this association. An Internet survey collected data from 219 self-identifying gay men. Results indicated that sexual behavior desires and enactments were highly correlated, and of the five moderators tested, four varied this association. Condom eschewers had a stronger association between desires and enactments than condom users. Gay men with fewer STIs/STDs (excluding HIV) also had a stronger association between the two variables. HIV serostatus did not exclusively moderate the association. Rather, a three-way interaction was produced such that HIV-positive men with STIs had a stronger association between sexual behavior desires and enactments than HIV-negative men with STIs. Finally, gay men in monogamous relationships were least likely to have their desires associated with enactments. Age was not found to be a significant moderator. Overall, we concluded the moderators representing sexual health and sexual health behaviors were most influential over the enactment of sexual behavior desires.

Sexual Health in the Netherlands : Main Results of a Population Survey Among Dutch Adults  / Ine Vanwesenbeeck, Floor Bakker, Susanne Gesell.

International Journal of Sexual Health, 22 (2010) 2 (apr-june), p. 55-71
bron: International Journal of Sexual Health jaargang: 22 (2010) 2 (apr-june), p. 55-71
samenvatting: In 2006, the Rutgers Nisso Groep conducted an extensive population survey to assess the epidemiology of sexual health in the Netherlands. The sample consists of a random selection of the adult population living in the Netherlands (N= 4147) who were approached through internet panels. The study assesses the prevalence of a broad range of sexual health issues, including sexual and relational satisfaction, experience of sexuality, sexual identity, paraphilia, excessive desire, sexual dysfunctions, contraception, abortion, infertility, testing for sexually transmitted infections and HIV, condom use, and sexual violence. The data show, among other findings, that a small half of the adult Dutch population was basically without sexual health-related problems or stress during the year preceding the study. The other half experienced problems to a varying extent in one or more areas. Overall, 24% of the women and 19% of the men have experienced a need for professional sexual health care during the previous year. For women and men alike, relational problems are the most common complaint. About half of those in need of one or another form of sexual health care actually received it. Young people and people with an ethnic minority background show an elevated need for sexual health care. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Inclusion and exclusion in mid-life lesbians' experiences of the Pap test  / Lynn McIntyre, Andrea Szewchuk, Jenny Munro.

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 12 (2010) 8 (nov), p. 885-898
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 12 (2010) 8 (nov), p. 885-898
samenvatting: Lesbians are said to feel excluded by sexual health messages that presume heterosexuality, a finding linked to lower levels of Papanicolaou (Pap) testing. This paper discusses a small, focused qualitative study based in Calgary, Canada that illuminated mid-life lesbians' experiences and perceptions of Pap testing and health. Participants indicated that they felt compelled and invited to access Pap testing by an inclusive discourse - that of 'mid-life', a period associated with an increased need for body surveillance. They also reflected upon aging as an experience of liberation, increased confidence and a time when they could 'catch up' on health and sexuality issues denied them in their younger days. On the other hand, there was significant uncertainty about Pap testing, human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer and what kind of sexual healthcare is necessary for lesbians, which was reinforced by physician messages suggesting a reduced need for Pap testing when lesbian sexual identity was disclosed. In approaching mid-life lesbian healthcare, we suggest that greater analytical attention should be paid to the ways in which lesbian women are included, as much as excluded, in dominant sexual health scripts particularly by health providers who need to attend to women's diverse experiences and needs.

samenvatting: Carried out in Brazil, India, Lebanon, South Africa & USA this research looks at how the internet plays host to critical information about sex education, health, fighting sex discrimination and defining one's own sexuality. It debunks the commonly-held view that sexuality online is just about pornography. The EROTICS project took place between June 2008 and June 2011 and was funded by The Ford Foundation. The primary research goal was to respond to the question: How may emerging debates and the growing practice of online content regulation either impede or facilitate the different ways women use the internet and the impact on their sexual expression, sexualities and sexual health practices, and the assertion of their sexual rights?

samenvatting: This manual has been designed to assist trainers to train service providers and all interested parties in understanding human sexuality through a human rights lens. This manual provides a means by which to disseminate information pertaining human sexuality. The activities outlined in this manual, explore the different concepts and constructs of human sexuality through an active learning approach. The goals of the training is to equip trainers to equip others to train in the challenging field of human sexuality, and to ultimately understand the challenges faced by LGBTI people, including MSM and WSW. During the training, the trainers will be confronted by their own sexualities and preferences. These issues will be explored and discussed in an understanding and affirmative environment. This process of understanding the self will enhance the development of insight into the world of sexual minorities. The activities will help the participants to feel more comfortable in talking about a theme that is often not talked about. This will lead to good quality group facilitation.

samenvatting: This is the 1st handbook in a series of 6 that provides a comprehensive guide and tool kit towards developing a community-based male sexual health programme working with MSM and associated issues in India. It is designed to be MSM and associated issues specific, focusing on the most visible of MSM from low-income networks, those whose self-identify as feminised males, such as kothis. It is based on the principles of self-help and peer education, using trained MSM to train others to develop their own services. The publisher hopes that this new format of handbooks will assist in the development of many more CBOs, to ensure that all MSM, their partners and families have access to appropriate sexual health, HIV/AIDS prevention, care and welfare services. This is book 1 with an introduction to Naz Foundation International, an international non-governmental organisation that exists to improve the sexual health, welfare and human rights for MSM, their partners and families.

samenvatting: This is the 3th handbook in a series of 6 that provides a comprehensive guide and tool kit towards developing a community-based male sexual health programme working with MSM and associated issues in India. It is designed to be MSM and associated issues specific, focusing on the most visible of MSM from low-income networks, those whose self-identify as feminised males, such as kothis. Book 3 explores the first phase of developing a peer-led intervention in a particular town or city. It needs to be recognised that in the main there is no such thing as an MSM community, but a series of autonomous networks of differing sexualities and identities, and that in South Asia the primary frameworks appears to be based on gendered roles, practices and performance. It is essential therefore before any intervention is developed, to discover what networks do exist, and what the sexual practices, sexual health concerns, levels of knowledge, and attitudes and behaviour among the differing networks and participants in male-to-male sexual behaviours are. In other words, a social and risk assessment amongst at-risk MSM needs to be done.

It is designed to be MSM and associated issues specific, focusing on the most visible of MSM from low-income networks, those whose self-identify as feminised males, such as kothis. Book 5 provides a range of models for management, including job descriptions, terms and conditions of employment, project reports, and so on. These are all useful for management procedures as an integral component of the intervention. It is not suggested that one should adopt these without reference to the specific needs of each individual project, but it does provide a reference tool when developing these specific aspects of management to make the project more successful. In the annexes an STI Guide and STI/AIDS terminology.
