Doubting Sex : Inscriptions, Bodies and Selves in Nineteenth-century Hermaphrodite Case Histories  /

resume: An adolescent girl is mocked when she takes a bath with her peers, because her genitals look like those of a boy. A couple visits a doctor asking to 'create more space' in the woman for intercourse. A doctor finds testicular tissue in a woman with appendicitis, and decides to keep his findings quiet. These are just a few of the three hundred European case histories of people whose sex was doubted during the long nineteenth century that Geertje Mak draws upon in her remarkable new book. Doubting sex offers a refreshingly new perspective on the relation between physical sex and identity over the long nineteenth century. Rather than taking sex, sexuality, and gender identity as a starting point for discussing their mutual relations, it historicizes these very categories. Based on a wealth of previously unused source material, the book asks how sex was doubted in practice - whether by lay people, by hermaphrodites themselves, or by physicians; how this doubt was dealt with; what tacit logics directed the practices by which a person was assigned a sex, and how these logics changed over time. Mak highlights three different rationales behind practices of doubting and (re)assigning sex: inscription, body and self. Sex as inscription refers to a lifelong inscription of a person in the social body as male or female, marked by the person's appearance. This logic made way for logics in which the truth of inner anatomy and inner self were more significant. Rich in fascinating examples and clear in argument, Doubting sex will be stimulating reading for academics in related fields, and make an accessible addition to reading lists for courses on gender and sexuality studies, queer studies, social history, history of medicine, and science and technology studies.

Conflicting Heterosexualities : Hermaphroditism and the Emergence of Surgery around 1900  / Geertje A. Mak.

Journal of the History of Sexuality, 24 (2015) 3 (sep), p. 402-427
source: Journal of the History of Sexuality year: 24 (2015) 3 (sep), p. 402-427
resume: Historians who have studied hermaphroditism generally agree that heteronormativity was directive in how medicine dealt with people whose sex was doubted around 1900. But what was the heterosexuality that was normative? This article describes the fierce national and international debates about precisely this issue that emerged between physicians around the turn of the twentieth century. The sudden urgency of the issue was directly related to a rapid and fundamental shift in surgical clinical practice in Europe and the United States. In 1890 two simultaneous medical innovations, effective antiseptic measures and the introduction of anesthesia, quickly changed surgery from a life-threatening experience to a commonly applied technique. The rise of surgery produced an exponential increase in its use in cases of hermaphroditism, both for diagnosis and for treatment. This led to all kinds of new problems concerning the clinical treatment of people of doubtful sex. In this article, I will use clinical case histories of hermaphroditism from around 1900 to unravel the many different ways in which heterosexuality (or fear of homosexuality) was enacted in this debate. For instance, a couple that had been deemed heterosexual because one of them looked like a man and the other like a woman in their quotidian appearance might in another context be deemed homosexual because doctors proved that the woman had testicles in her abdomen. Such differences show that heterosexuality is not a single, clearly defined thing or norm but is rather very much divided in and of itself. I will end this essay on a more theoretical note, arguing that skepticism about heteronormativity?s unity and stability is more useful than criticizing it as a grid of ?intelligibility? that makes certain lives ?unlivable.?

Doubting Sex from Within : A Praxiographic Approach to a Late Nineteenth-Century Case of Hermaphroditism  / Geertje Mak.

Gender & History, 18 (2006) 2 (aug), p. 332-356
source: Gender & History year: 18 (2006) 2 (aug), p. 332-356
resume: The purpose of this article has been to make a praxiographic analysis of a nineteenth-century medical case history of doubtful sex in order to find out how 'sex' - in all its different manifestations - actually takes shape in historical clinical practices surrounding cases of doubtful sex. It is an attempt to move away from the antagonistic opposition between a medical gold standard of 'true' sex and a personal ?true? sex. Patients and doctors in a clinical encounter thereby do not necessarily thwart each other, nor do they, for that matter, always cooperate smoothly. But they do shape sex, a 'sex that is not one', because all the different practices involved enact different sexes. Sex, as a result of the ways it is read in different practices - medical, sexual, everyday - and the way these readings are communicated (or not), authorised, lived, applied or enacted, is a very complex achievement which has much more nuanced and interesting layers, interferences and connections than the simple divide between 'objective' and 'subjective' suggests. Along the lines of the multiple body posited by Annemarie Mol, I would, however, argue that sex is multiple but not fragmented.

Metamorfose van Sekse : Hermafroditisme en de verschijning van een 'sekse van het zelf' in operatieve praktijken vanaf het einde van de negentiende eeuw.  / Geertje Mak.

Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies, 11 (2008) 2, p. 23-38
source: Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies year: 11 (2008) 2 , p. 23-38
