Stigmatization and Resilience in Adolescent Children of Lesbian Mothers  / Loes Van Gelderen ... [et al.].

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 5 (2009) 3 (july-sep), p. 268-279
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 5 (2009) 3 (july-sep), p. 268-279
samenvatting: This paper reviews the historical and cultural milieu in which lesbians formed families in the late twentieth century, the psychosocial development of children of lesbian mothers, and the influence of factors that protect them from the negative influences of homophobia. It argues that the focus of research in lesbian families should expand from comparing children in lesbian households with their counterparts in heterosexual families to examining personal, family, and community resources that can reduce the negative impact of homophobia on young people. Adolescents in Lesbian Families : DSM-Oriented Scale Scores and Stigmatization  / Henry Bos, Nanette Gartrell, Loes van Gelderen.

Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, 25 (2013) 2 (apr-jun), p. 121-140
bron: Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 25 (2013) 2 (apr-jun), p. 121-140
samenvatting: The present study focused on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-oriented scale scores from Child Behavior Checklists completed by parents of the 17-year-old offspring in the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS; 39 girls/39 boys). In comparison with the scores of an age-matched normative sample (49 girls/44 boys; MANOVA), no significant differences in scores were found. Within the NLLFS sample, adolescents who reported stigmatization scored higher on affective, anxiety, and conduct problems. Although overall psychological functioning of the NLLFS adolescents fell within the healthy range, stigmatization had a negative impact on the well-being of some adolescents. Lesbian and heterosexual two-parent families: adolescent-parent relationship quality and adolescent well-being.  / Henny Bos, Loes van Gelderen and Nanette Gartrell.

Journal of Child and Family Studies, 24 (2015) 4, p. 1031-1046
bron: Journal of Child and Family Studies jaargang: 24 (2015) 4 , p. 1031-1046
samenvatting: This study compared 51 adolescents from intact two-mother planned lesbian families (all conceived through donor insemination) with 51 adolescents from intact mother-father families on their relationships with their parents (parental control, disclosure to parents, and adolescent-parent relationship quality), psychological adjustment (selfesteem, social anxiety, and conduct problems), and substance usage (consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana/hashish). The adolescents (average age 16 years) were matched on demographic characteristics (age, gender, educational level, country of birth, parental birth country) with a sample from a large school-based survey, and data were collected by means of adolescent self-reports. Analyses indicated that adolescents in both family types had positive relationships with their parents, which were favorably associated with psychological well-being. On the assessments of psychological adjustment and substance use, family type was significantly associated only with self-esteem and conduct problems: Adolescents with lesbian mothers had higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of conduct problems than their counterparts in heterosexual-parent families. Overall, the findings indicate that adolescents from intact two-mother lesbian families are comparable to those in a matched comparison group with intact mother-father families. The few differences found on psychological wellbeing favored the adolescents in lesbian two-mother families.

Dutch adolescents from lesbian-parent families : How do they compare to peers with heterosexual parents and what is the impact of homophobic stigmatization?  / Loes van Rijn-van Gelderen, Henny M.W. Bos, Nanette K.Gartrell.

Journal of Adolescence, 40 (2015) (apr), p. 65-73
bron: Journal of Adolescence jaargang: 40 (2015)(apr), p. 65-73
samenvatting: In this study, we compared internalizing and externalizing problem behavior of 67 Dutch adolescents (Mage = 16.04) in planned lesbian families who were matched with 67 adolescents in heterosexual-parent families. We also examined whether homophobic stigmatization was associated with problem behavior in adolescents with lesbian mothers after taking into account demographic characteristics, mothers' scores on emotional involvement, and adolescents' earlier problem behavior (measured at age 4-8 years old). Standardized instruments measuring problem behavior were completed by parents and adolescent offspring, and questions about stigmatization were answered by adolescents with lesbian mothers. The results revealed no differences in internalizing and externalizing problem behavior associated with family type. Offspring in lesbian families who reported more experiences of homophobic stigmatization also demonstrated more internalizing and externalizing problem behavior.

Self-esteem and problem behavior in Dutch adolescents conceived through sperm donation in planned lesbian parent families  / Henny Bos, Loes van Rijn-van Gelderen & Nanette Gartrell.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 24 (2020) 1 (jan-mrt), p. 41-55
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 24 (2020) 1 (jan-mrt), p. 41-55
samenvatting: Until 2004, Dutch women seeking donor insemination through medical facilities could opt for open-identity or anonymous donors. Since then, Dutch law only permits open-identity donation. The present study compared the well-being of adolescents conceived before 2004 through known, open-identity, and anonymous donors, and born into planned lesbian parent families (i.e., the mothers identified as lesbian before the children were conceived). The sixty-seven participating adolescents (Mage = 16.04 years) completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Youth Self-Report, and answered questions about their donor. Thirty-three were conceived through known, twenty-two through open-identity, and twelve through anonymous donors. No significant associations were found between donor type and self-esteem or problem behavior. Likewise, no significant differences were found on these two variables for adolescents with known donors who did or did not play important roles in their lives. For adolescents conceived with sperm from as-yet unknown donors (open-identity or anonymous), feeling uncomfortable about not knowing the donor was associated with lower self-esteem and more externalizing problem behavior. That donor type was found to have no bearing on adolescent self-esteem or problem behavior may be useful to prospective lesbian parents.

samenvatting: Primary schools are required to educate their pupils about sexual diversity, yet little is known about how schools fulfil this task in practice. An important factor determining pupils' attitudes towards LGBT+ is their ethnic background and religiosity. To address this gap in existing research, this study investigates how two groups of teachers in primary schools in the Netherlands educate their pupils about sexual diversity: Teachers (n=4) teaching in classes with high levels of pupil diversity regarding religion and ethnicity (heterogenous classes), and teachers (n=5) teaching in classes with little diversity (homogenous classes). Data was collected by conducting interviews, which predominantly focused on the attitude and behavior teachers displayed and the lessons and teaching materials. Furthermore, an image is given of the context in which the teachers teach. The interviews were coded and analyzed using Atlas. The results indicated that in general all teachers pay attention to sexual diversity, but in which way and which frequency differs per teacher. Despite equally good intentions from both teacher groups, the study found a more accepting atmosphere towards sexual diversity in homogeneous classes. Within homogeneous classes teachers offered incidental and structural attention to sexual diversity. Within heterogeneous classes, only incidental attention was offered and pupils? attitudes towards LGBT+ were less accepting. These findings suggest that all schools, regardless of the ethnic background and religiosity of pupils, should create a positive learning environment in regard to sexual diversity. The results of this study indicate that this can be accomplished by providing pupils with structural attention and creating an atmosphere in the classroom which promotes open and more frequent conversations about the topic.

Raadselachtige 'selfies' van fotograaf Marcel Bascoulard  / Oscar van Gelderen.

NRC 28-10-2021
bron: NRC 28-10-2021
