'Rescued' subjects : The question of religiosity for non-heteronormative asylum seekers in the UK  / Calogero Giametta.

Sexualities, 17 (2014) 5-6 (sep), p. 583-599
source: Sexualities year: 17 (2014) 5-6 (sep), p. 583-599
resume: The article is based on extended ethnography with people who have claimed asylum in the UK on the grounds of their sexual orientation. This migrant group negotiates their sexual and gender identities across cultural constructions of gender liminality that do not match the repertoires of western sexual identifications. On the one hand I pose the question: How do religious non-heteronormative refugees situate themselves within broader discourses of progress, particularly when confronted with the legal framework? On the other hand I ask: What role do western temporal categories of progress and backwardness play when the migrant seeks to stake a claim to subject-status in the current UK social world?

Reorienting Participation, Distance and Positionality : Ethnographic Encounters with Gender and Sexual Minority Migrants  / Calogero Giametta.

Sexualities, 21 (2018) 5-6 (sep), p. 868-882
source: Sexualities year: 21 (2018) 5-6 (sep), p. 868-882
resume: In this article, the author reflects on how complementing an interview-based methodological approach with participation may be conducive to creating nuanced knowledges about processes of identification, belonging and marginalization. The thoughts he elaborates on emerge from two experiences of fieldwork conducted with gender and sexual minority migrants in the UK and France. He dwells on the uses that social researchers make of some well-established methods when doing research fieldwork: participant observation, researcher's distance, and positionality. In so doing, the author activates the queer signifier to help us think through how the words researchers use, and where they are situated, influence their sensibilities as investigators of the social.

New asylum protection categories and elusive filtering devices: the case of 'Queer asylum' in France and the UK  / Calogero Giametta.

Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (2018) (jul), p. 1-17
source: Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (2018)(jul), p. 1-17
resume: In Europe asylum seekers are confronted with migration-filtering techniques when beginning their rights claiming procedures, during the decision-making process of their asylum claims, and finally across the procedural constraints imposed on them. In this article, I want to look at asylum through a focus on newly recognised refugee protection categories: sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). In so doing, I concentrate on the ordinary, yet effective, manifestations of the filtering devices inherent in the politics of asylum by examining the elusiveness of current migration control practices. I aim to elaborate on the discrepancy between the widening of refugee protection, through the inclusion of gender identity and sexual orientation as grounds of asylum, and the increasingly restrictive practices that define the refugee granting process in France and the UK. The analytical considerations in the article emerge from interviewing and conducting ethnography over a three-year period between London, Paris and Marseille with gender and sexual minority refugees, immigration lawyers and refugee support workers and volunteers. The article seeks to sociologically investigate the claim of 'asylum as filtering device' within two western European national settings.
