resume: Throughout the 19th century, increasing emphasis was laid on sex as the most natural, yet also the most mysterious thing about human nature. The notion that the truth about sex and the sexed body would resolve the ancient question of identity, divided society and its researchers along political lines. Once sex emanated as a fully-fledged part of general debate, (identity-based) sex politics polarized with adapted evolutionist rhetoric gaining ascendancy in liberal opinion and common beliefs. In the academic arena the disagreements between essentialists and social constructionists - especially on the 'nature' of homosexuality - have spawned a considerable body of militant literature in recent years. When trying to surmount the sometimes one-sided politicization of (homo)sexuality, only a critical approach of both traditions can prove successful. By queering our own assertions on the social functioning and finality of (knowledge of) sex, we might put an end to what seems to have become an outworn standoff.

Niettemin tonen talloze bestofte gerechtelijke dossiers aan dat 'de liefde die haar eigen naam niet noemen durfde' ook bij ons allesbehalve zeldzaam was. Dit boek gebruikt deze fascinerende procesdossiers als leidraad om een verborgen geschiedenis bloot te leggen: als gidsen doorheen een vergeten wereld van badhuizen, urinoirs, achterkamers en homobars, en als de rijke getuigenissen van vurige verlangens die de samenleving lange tijd begreep als zondig of ziek. Verzwegen verlangen reconstrueert de leefwereld van 'potten' en 'pederasten' in België, van de middeleeuwen tot vandaag, en bespreekt de veranderende mentaliteit rond een thema dat slechts met mondjesmaat publiekelijk bespreekbaar werd.

resume: Apart from Interpol, the International Association of Penal Law, the International Society of Criminology, the Council of Europe, the World Health Organization, the United Nations' Social Defence Section, and several more agencies all put sexual "deviance" and homosexuality more particularly on their interlocking agendas during the 1950s and the early 1960s. Paradoxically, while these organizations initially served mainly as aconduit for the spread of postwar fears about the growth of sexual crime and the dangers of the homosexual seduction of minors, during the late 1940s and the early 1950s they became the engines of what one observer called, with hindsight, the "dedramatization" of sexual crime soon thereafter, helping to create an international consensus that among other things, homosexuality should be decriminalized. This article examines the emergence of homosexuality as a matter of international penal policy within organizations that were, at the time, still primarely dominated by Western European countries, even though more global and transatlantic connections would also approve important.

Pas de deux, out of step : Diverging chronologies of homosexuality's (de)criminalisation in the Low Countries  / Wannes Dupont.

resume: This article aims to complement two earlier ones by Theo van der Meer and Joke Swiebel in the previous issue of this journal (Swiebel, 2019; Van der Meer, 2019) on the history of homosexuality's criminalisation in the Netherlands by exploring the same theme from a Belgian perspective. Whereas article 248bis of the Dutch penal code raised the age of consent for homosexual relations from 1911 to 1971, its highly similar Belgian counterpart, article 372bis, was only adopted in 1965 and repealed again in 1985. The analysis will not only devote attention to this striking chronological divergence, but also point to important parallels and cross-border connections. While, individually, this contribution is primarily an attempt to tentatively contextualise homosexualitys legal history in Belgium, it may be hoped that, together with Van der Meer's and Swiebel's, it may serve as a call for more much-needed comparative research on the history of (homo)sexuality in the Low Countries.

resume: Over homoseksualiteit is de laatste decennia ontzettend veel gezegd en geschreven. Dat dit niet zomaar als een universele en transhistorische constante dient te worden beschouwd, is inmiddels ten overvloede beargumenteerd door zowel sociologen en historici. Voor historici vormt de studie ervan in een ver verleden een erg specifieke methodologische en heuristische uitdaging. Waarop baseert men een goede zoekstrategie? Terwijl er de laatste kwarteeuw in de buurlanden behoorlijk veel speurwerk is verricht en ondertussen heel wat materiaal is opgedolven, blijft het over België opvallend stil. Katholieke schroom misschien? Zulke schroom heeft er zeker toe bijgedragen dat de beoefenaars van zo een zo enstig metier er lange tijd van afgezien hebben om aan een gevoelige materie als homoseksualiteti hun vingers te branden. Reeds tijdens de late jaren zestig irriteerde deze preutsheid een eenzame uitzondering in het Vlaamse historiografische landschap al dermate dat hij zich genoodzaakt voelde om naar Nederland uit te wijken. Maar daarmee is uiteraard ook niet alles gezegd over de opvallende leemte in het onderzoek en is er allicht meer aan de hand. Dat laatste vermoeden ligt aan de basis van deze bijdrage. Die wil aantonen, hoe specifieke historische factoren sterke barrières hebben opgeworpen die de historische studie van homoseksualiteit in België aanzienlijk bemoeilijken. Tegelijkertijd wordt aangevoerd dat de relatieve schaarste aan veel bronnenmateriaal niet zomaar mag doen besluiten dat wat niet meteen gevonden wordt, geen geschiedenis heeft. Het verhaal van een geheel vergeten affaire wijst de weg door de archieven heen, naar de sporen van een verleden dat niet geheel strookt met de verwachtingen.
