An Evaluation of Gay/Lesbian and Heterosexual Adoption  / Paige Averett, Blace Nalavany, Scott Ryan.

Adoption Quarterly, 12 (2009) 3/4, p. 129-151
bron: Adoption Quarterly jaargang: 12 (2009) 3/4 , p. 129-151
samenvatting: Many experts in the helping professions have agreed that there is no scientific credence to support a gay and lesbian adoption ban. Nevertheless, there continues to be persistent mythology pertaining to outcomes for children adopted by gay and lesbian parents. This position may be somewhat due to the dearth of research that compares heterosexual and homosexual parenting outcomes with adopted children. To respond to this gap in the literature, this study explored the extent of emotional and behavioral problems among children aged 1.5 to 5 years (n = 380) and 6 to 18 years (n = 1,004) with gay and lesbian or heterosexual adoptive parents. A multiple regression analysis was used to assess the association between the dependent variables (child internalizing and externalizing behavior) on adoptive parent sexual orientation (gay and lesbian or heterosexual) while controlling for child age, child sex, pre-adoptive maltreatment, co-sibling adoption, adoption preparation, family income, and family functioning. As hypothesized, results indicted that child internalizing and externalizing behavior was not contingent upon adoptive parent sexual orientation. Rather, regardless of sexual orientation, adoptive parents are likely to encounter similar challenges in terms of risk factors for child behavioral problems and mitigating factors of such behavior. Recommendations for practice, policy, and future research are highlighted.

How Children Rearrange the Closet: Disclosure Practices of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Prospective Parents  / Cara A. Bergstrom-Lynch.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 8 (2012) 2 (mar-apr), p. 173-195
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 8 (2012) 2 (mar-apr), p. 173-195
samenvatting: Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (GLBTQ) people in the United States are increasingly living lives beyond the closet. Previous research on the organization of postmodern families has not revealed how those who are GLBTQ are negotiating disclosure of their sexual identities during the process of becoming parents. This research fills this gap by looking at how parenthood rearranges the closet. It finds that parents overwhelmingly prefer to be open about their sexual orientation and gender identity, but many had to negotiate their disclosure during interactions with legal and medical institutions. Parents who used sperm banks and surrogacy agencies were better able to be out than those who chose adoption. Implications for practitioners and future research are addressed. The Disclosure Practices of a South African-Born Adolescent Raised in an American Lesbian-Parent Family  / Carien Lubbe, Liana Kruger.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 8 (2012) 4 (july-sep), p. 385-402
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 8 (2012) 4 (july-sep), p. 385-402
samenvatting: This qualitative case study explores the disclosure practices of a South African-born adolescent who is raised in a lesbian-parent family in the United States of America, in an attempt to understand how adolescents negotiate their unique family structure throughout their daily lives. The data in this study were analysed using thematic content analysis. The concept of moral cultures is adopted from the work of Hart and Carlo (2005) and identified in the following dominant discourses in the life of the adolescent participant, namely: religion, school, friends, acquaintances and society at large, and emotions. Furthermore, social control seems to be a very prominent factor in the decision of adolescents raised in same-gendered families to disclose or withhold information. Casual-calculated disclosure is identified as a method for social control, when disclosing information about the family structure becomes inevitable for an individual. Furthermore, the decision to disclose is generally based on (1) a perception of urgency, (2) the existence of an intimate relationship, and (3) the disclosure of information based on a shared experience. Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Parenting : Exploratory, Confirmatory, and Invariance Analyses of Two Psychometric Scales  / Jorge Gato, Daniela Freitas, Anne Marie Fontaine.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 9 (2013) 3 (may-jun), p. 205-229
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 9 (2013) 3 (may-jun), p. 205-229
samenvatting: In this article we describe the process of construction and validation of two instruments devised to measure attitudes toward same-sex parenting. One instrument focuses on evaluations of the parents and the other on evaluations of their child's development. Both instruments are presented after an adoption vignette in which the sexual orientation and relational status of the prospective adoptive parents and the gender of the adopted child were varied. First, we determined the factorial structure of the two instruments using exploratory factor analysis. Second, we validated the observed factorial structures using confirmatory factor analysis. Third, we tested the measurement invariance of this model across the prospective adoptive parents' sexual orientation, relational status, and gender of their adopted child using multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis. The two instruments showed good psychometric qualities and proved to be reliable resources to measure diverse aspects of attitudes toward same-sex parenting. Wanted Fathers : Understanding Gay Father Families through Contextual Family Therapy  / Katie M. Heiden Rootes.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 9 (2013) 1 (jan-feb), p. 43-64
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 9 (2013) 1 (jan-feb), p. 43-64
samenvatting: This conceptual paper is concerned with the application of Contextual Family Therapy to gay father families (Boszormenyi-Nagy & Krasner, 1986). Gay fathers experience social and sexual stigma as a result of being both gay and male caregivers of children. Concurrently, much of family theory and therapy is laden with heteronormative assumptions and biases. However, after reviewing several studies that highlighted the activist nature of parenthood for gay fathers, Contextual Family Therapy social justice concepts of entitlement, loyalty, and legacy are offered as a new paradigm for understanding gay father families. Contextual Family Therapy therefore may frame how gay father families enact constructive entitlements for creating families that bend gender stereotypes about gay men (and men in general) as caregivers while remaining flexible and inclusive of adopted and fostered children. The professional implications discussed include suggestions for the therapeutic applications of Contextual Family Therapy with gay father families. Attitudes to Practice : National Survey of Adoption Obstacles Faced by Gay and Lesbian Prospective Parents  / Claire Kimberly & Alexa Moore.

Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, 27 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 436-456
bron: Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 27 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 436-456
samenvatting: Gays and lesbians wishing to adopt are challenged with managing policies and practices about their right to adopt while also trying to identify adoption professionals that do not stigmatize against them. In an attempt to understand how attitudes toward same-sex couples potentially influence adoption professionals and surrounding policies/practices, 187 surveys were sent to adoption agencies throughout the United States. Questions posed focused on the directors' (a) knowledge of state and federal policies surrounding LGs adopting, (b) attitudes toward equal rights for same-sex couples, and (c) opinions of LGs as parents. These variables accounted for 42% of variance in regards to whether or not these agencies would accept applications from LGs. Attitudes of students towards parental competence and child developmental aspects of homosexual, and lesbian couples : A cross-cultural comparison between Portugal and the Netherlands.  / Nynke Burgers.

  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: There is a big diversity between countries in the opinions, attitudes and existing laws toward homosexuality in general and same-sex parenting. Even dough same sex couples do not differ in parenting quality compared to heterosexual couples, a father-mother family is still the norm in Western society. Lesbian mothers do encounter negative reactions experiences due to this non-traditional family composition, which influences their parenting experiences. To evaluate diversities in attitudes toward parental competence and child developmental aspects of homosexual and lesbian parents between countries the cultural theory of Hofstede was used. This theory uses the dimensions of masculinity and femininity to differentiate cultures. Within more masculine countries there is a stronger gender role discourse, homosexuality and same sex parenting threatens these stronger gender roles, which leads to more rejections and negative attitudes. Within feminine countries there is much more equality in gender roles within the family and therefore more acceptance. Therefore it was assumed that, attitudes toward parental competences and child developmental aspects of homosexual and same sex parents are more positive in more feminine countries compared to more masculine countries. This was assessed by comparing students from a more masculine country (Portugal) with students from a more feminine scoring country (the Netherlands). A total of 564 of Portuguese and 273 participated in this study. Exploratory analysis conducted on item level showed that Dutch students were more positive about the recommendation of homosexual and lesbian couples as adoptive parents compared to the Portuguese students. Composition of the family also did matter within Portugal the heterosexual couple were more positively evaluated compared to the homosexual and lesbian couple on different aspects of parental competence. However, composition of the family (heterosexual, homosexual, or lesbian parents) did not matter within the Netherlands for parental competence.

Rethinking Kinship : A Strengths-Based Perspective on LGBTQ Foster and Adoptive Parents  / Sarah Mountz.

LGBTQ Policy Journal, 4 (2013-2014), p. 77-84
bron: LGBTQ Policy Journal jaargang: 4 (2013-2014), p. 77-84
samenvatting: This article examines and dismantles the body of claims used to exclude lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals from fostering and adopting children. LGBTQ individuals continue to face stigma and discrimination in the United States, including in the child welfare system, which significantly shapes their views of family and society. These experiences of marginality may actually enhance their capacity as adoptive and foster parents. Rejection from families of origin has sometimes led LGBTQ people to establish kinship networks or 'families of choice.' This ideological approach to creating family may enhance the flexibility and openness that are trademarks of exceptional adoptive and foster parenting.
