samenvatting: Lesbians, bisexual women and transgender (LBT) individuals in Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka face violence and exclusion in every sphere of their lives. This violence is fueled by laws that criminalize same-sex relations and gender non-conformaty and encouraged by governments who tolerate, endorse, or directly sponsor the violent clamp-down on those who do not follow prevailing norms on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. This is the main finding from the research coordinated by the IGLHRC and conducted over a two-year period by women's rights, sexuality rights and gender rights activists.

Portuguese Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Sexual Minorities : Transphobia, Homophobia, and Gender Role Beliefs  / Pedro Alexandre Costa, Michelle Davies.

Journal of Homosexuality, 59 (2012) 10 (nov-dec), p. 1424-1442
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 59 (2012) 10 (nov-dec), p. 1424-1442
samenvatting: Research has shown that negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men are common and widespread in Western societies. However, few studies have addressed attitudes toward transgender individuals. In addition, although research has shown that homophobic harassment and bullying is highly common among adolescents, little is known about adolescent's attitudes toward sexual minorities. This study aimed to fill these gaps in knowledge, by investigating adolescents' attitudes toward transgender individuals and possible attitudinal correlates of those attitudes. Participants (N = 188; 62 males and 126 females) were recruited in high schools in Lisbon, Portugal. Age ranged from 15 to 19 years (M = 17; SD = .96). Participants completed a questionnaire booklet measuring attitudes toward transgender individuals, lesbians, and gay men, and gender role beliefs. Results revealed that attitudes toward transgender individuals were significantly correlated with all attitude measures. Specifically, it was revealed that those participants who endorsed negative attitudes toward transgender individuals were also endorsing of negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men and tended to adhere to traditional gender roles. A significant gender effect was found with males being more negative toward sexual minorities than females, but these negative attitudes were more extreme toward gay men than toward lesbian women. Implications of these findings are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00918369.2012.724944#.VJf7Av8LALA ]

Diversity of commercial sex among men and male-born trans people in three Peruvian cities  / César R. Nureña ... [et al.].

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 13 (2011) 10, p. 1207-1221
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 13 (2011) 10 , p. 1207-1221
samenvatting: In Peru, commercial sex involving men and male-born travestis, transgenders and transsexuals (CSMT) is usually represented as a dangerous practice carried out on the streets by people experiencing economic hardship and social exclusion. However, in reality little is known about the complexities of this practice in Peru. This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of the characteristics, patterns and sociocultural aspects of CSMT in three Peruvian cities. The study included participant observation in sex work venues and interviews with 42 sex workers and 25 key informants. We found that CSMT in Peru takes many forms (some not previously described in the country) and is practised in different places by people from various socioeconomic levels. In many cases, the practice appears linked to ideals of social mobility, migratory experiences and other economic activities. In addition, the increasing use of the Internet and mobile phones has changed patterns of sex work in Peru. We review the implications of these findings for future research and public health interventions.

Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender-Nonconforming People, Version 7  / E. Coleman ... [et al.].

International Journal of Transgenderism, 13 (2012) 4, p. 165-232
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 13 (2012) 4 , p. 165-232
samenvatting: The Standards of Care (SOC) for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People is a publication of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). The overall goal of the SOC is to provide clinical guidance for health professionals to assist transsexual, transgender, and gender nonconforming people with safe and effective pathways to achieving lasting personal comfort with their gendered selves, in order to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being, and self-fulfillment. This assistance may include primary care, gynecologic and urologic care, reproductive options, voice and communication therapy, mental health services (e.g., assessment, counseling, psychotherapy), and hormonal and surgical treatments. The SOC are based on the best available science and expert professional consensus. Because most of the research and experience in this field comes from a North American and Western European perspective, adaptations of the SOC to other parts of the world are necessary. The SOC articulate standards of care while acknowledging the role of making informed choices and the value of harm reduction approaches. In addition, this version of the SOC recognizes that treatment for gender dysphoria i.e., discomfort or distress that is caused by a discrepancy between persons gender identity and that persons sex assigned at birth (and the associated gender role and/or primary and secondary sex characteristics) has become more individualized. Some individuals who present for care will have made significant self-directed progress towards gender role changes or other resolutions regarding their gender identity or gender dysphoria. Other individuals will require more intensive services. Health professionals can use the SOC to help patients consider the full range of health services open to them, in accordance with their clinical needs and goals for gender expression. Depression in Trans People : A Review of the Risk Factors  / Nooshin Khobzi Rotondi.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 13 (2012) 3, p. 104-116
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 13 (2012) 3 , p. 104-116
samenvatting: Depression is a commonly occurring syndrome characterized by mood-related symptoms; however, it is understudied among trans people (transgender, transsexual, or transitioned). A review of the existing literature on depression revealed eight factors pertinent to trans communities including discrimination, disclosure, identity support, hormones and sex-reassignment surgeries, sociodemographics, socioeconomic factors, substance use, and access to health and social services. This report demonstrates that depression in trans people is a multifaceted condition, which is not easily explained by a single factor. Developing an understanding of such complexities may open the door to more sensitive and appropriate mental health care for trans people. Suicide Protective Factors Among Trans Adults  / Chérie Moody, Nathan Grant Smith.

Archives of Sexual Behavior, 42 (2013) 5 (july), p. 739-752
bron: Archives of Sexual Behavior jaargang: 42 (2013) 5 (july), p. 739-752
samenvatting: A recent study indicated a suicide attempt rate of 41 % among trans (e.g., trans, transgender, transexual/transsexual, genderqueer, two-spirit) individuals. Although this rate is alarming, there is a dearth of literature regarding suicide prevention for trans individuals. A vital step in developing suicide prevention models is the identification of protective factors. It was hypothesized that social support from friends, social support from family, optimism, reasons for living, and suicide resilience, which are known to protect cis (non-trans) individuals, also protect trans individuals. A sample of self-identified trans Canadian adults (N = 133) was recruited from LGBT and trans LISTSERVs. Data were collected online using a secure survey platform. A three block hierarchical multiple regression model was used to predict suicidal behavior from protective factors. Social support from friends, social support from family, and optimism significantly and negatively predicted 33 % of variance in participants? suicidal behavior after controlling for age. Reasons for living and suicide resilience accounted for an additional 19 % of the variance in participants? suicidal behavior after controlling for age, social support from friends, social support from family, and optimism. Of the factors mentioned above, perceived social support from family, one of three suicide resilience factors (emotional stability), and one of six reasons for living (child-related concerns) significantly and negatively predicted participants? suicidal behavior. Overall, these findings can be used to inform the practices of mental health workers, medical doctors, and suicide prevention workers working with trans clients.
