No going back : lesbian and gay people and the asylum system  / By Nathanael Miles.

[London]: Stonewall, [2010] - 36 p.
edition: [London] : Stonewall, [2010] - 36 p.
subjects:
theme:
  1. migratie/vluchtelingen/asiel
  2. homoseksualiteit
resume: Consensual acts between same-sex adults are criminalised in 80 member states of the United Nationas and homosexuality results in the death penalty in six of these countries. Lesbian, gay and bisexual people face execution, torture, rape and murder from people in their own community or from their government. People who face the threat of this type of persecution can seek sanctuary in the uk but many are not granted protection because of fundamental errors of judgement and presumptions made by UK Border Agency. Stonewall interviewed lesbian, gay and bisexual asylum-seekers, legal professionals, asylum support workers and UK Border Agency (UKBA) staff. We wanted to find out how lesbian, gay and bisexual people seek asylum in the UK and how UKBA staff respond to their applications. The interviews covered all aspects of the asylum process and considered how lesbian, gay and bisexual people move through the asylum system and how decisions are made and communicated. The results of those interviews are presented in this report.

edition: [Beirut] : Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights ; [etc.], 2011 - 17 p.
subjects:
theme:
  1. migratie/vluchtelingen/asiel
  2. homoseksualiteit
resume: Many Iraqi gay men fled to neighboring countries in the last years, since many men who were engaging in homosexual conduct, or were found to be simply "too effeminate" were targeted by militant groups in 2009. But these individuals continue to be at serious risk from discrimination and violence in both home and host countries and their needs for safety and support are often not identified by service providers working with them.

Norwegian sexualities: Assimilation and exclusion in Norwegian immigration policy  / Wencke Mühleisen, Åse Røthing, Stine H. Bang Svendsen.

Sexualities, 15 (2012) 2 (mar), p. 139-155
source: Sexualities year: 15 (2012) 2 (mar), p. 139-155
resume: In this article, we discuss how certain sexual norms currently labeled as 'Norwegian' come into play in immigration policy related to marriage migrants and homosexuals who seek asylum in Norway. Our analyses indicate that discourses on sexuality in immigration politics are gendered and racialized at the Norwegian border. We discuss the continued significance of Orientalist notions that render its sexual subjects as inherently 'different' and supposedly premodern in contemporary regulation of immigration to Norway. Independence, freedom of choice and informed, strategic initiative, usually considered late modern ideals, seem to be grounds for suspecting the motivation for migration. Migration seems to be legitimate only when it is a result of necessity caused by the inherent emotional and sexual needs which signify the authentic homosexual and marriage migrant.

Bullermen and Zamis : The LGB West Indian's Perspective  / Danny K. Phillip & Traci S. Williams.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 7 (2013) 2 (apr-jun), p. 143-153
source: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling year: 7 (2013) 2 (apr-jun), p. 143-153
resume: The lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) West Indian migrant experience has not been extensively investigated. As a result, practitioners may not be aware of this group's unique circumstances and thus may not be equipped to treat clients from a culturally sensitive standpoint. Considering what has been studied regarding asylum seeking, immigration issues, cultural beliefs of same-sex behavior, mental illness, help seeking, and prevalence rates of affective disorders, the authors discuss the implications on mental health this combination can yield, while providing guidelines for treatment. Areas of future research include studies of psychopathology in larger and more representative samples of West Indians in the Caribbean and in the United States, efficacy studies of treatment modalities, and the impact of internalized homophobia on mental health for LGB West Indians.
