'I concluded that I owe her awe.' : Mary Meriam chats with Lillian Faderman, the author of My Mother's wars  / Mary Meriam ; Lillian Faderman.

The Gay & Lesbian Review, 20 (2013) 5 (sep-oct), p. 14-15
source: The Gay & Lesbian Review year: 20 (2013) 5 (sep-oct), p. 14-15
resume: Interview with Lillian Faderman, who has devoted her career to rescuing from oblivion the voices and stories of lesbians and ethnic minorities. Faderman is a historian, and her books opened the closet door to the rich, troubled history of lesbians. In 2003, Faderman published Naked in the Promised Land: A Memoir, which ends with her mother?s death. Her new book, My Mother?s Wars, published in March, ends with Faderman?s birth. My Mother?s Wars is the imagined memoir that Faderman?s mother was never able to write. The book is a riveting chapter in the history of women, as well as Faderman?s poignant, personal tribute to the courage and resilience of her mother.

'We never expected this to happen' : narratives of ageing with HIV among gay men living in London, UK  / Gareth Owen, Jose Catalan.

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 14 (2012) 1, p. 59-72
source: Culture, Health and Sexuality year: 14 (2012) 1 , p. 59-72
resume: The proportion of HIV-positive people over the age of 50 is rapidly increasing in the UK. This reflects the use of antiretroviral therapies and the transformation of HIV from life-threatening disease to chronic treatable illness. In this study a biographical narrative approach was used to explore the lived experience of ageing in 10 HIV-positive gay men aged between 50 and 78. While some participants regarded ageing as an opportunity to continue progressing towards valued life goals, others were more ambivalent about their future prospects. The findings suggest that these differences were particularly influenced by an individual's biographic relationship to the history of the HIV epidemic rather than chronological age. Those with long histories of involvement with HIV were more likely to be disadvantaged by careers interrupted by illness, to be dependent on state benefits and to have social networks damaged by multiple AIDS-related bereavements. The research identifies a cohort of older gay men likely to require additional support in adapting to the challenge of growing older with HIV. The article also explores the construction of moral identities in relation to discourses of ?successful ageing? and the possibility of building supportive communities that are sensitive to the needs of older gay men.

Assessing Developmental Trajectories of Sexual Minority Youth : Discrepant Findings from a Life History Calendar and a Self-Administered Survey  / Colleen M. Fisher.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 9 (2012) 2 (apr-june), p. 114-135
source: Journal of LGBT Youth year: 9 (2012) 2 (apr-june), p. 114-135
resume: Research suggests that the timing and sequence of sexual identity development milestones impact myriad health and mental health outcomes for sexual minority youth. Because these milestone events are typically assessed retrospectively, traditional data collection approaches are limited by recall bias and lack of precision in the recording of milestone events, which may conceal the distinctions between events and distort the recording of youth's developmental trajectories. The purpose of this exploratory study was to compare responses to questions about psychosexual milestones elicited by a Life History Calendar and a self-administered survey. Results indicated discrepancies in the reported occurrence and timing of milestone events between the two data collection methods. Differences in the timing of specific milestone events ranged from two months to 15 years. Implications of these discordant findings for sexual minority youth are discussed. resume: Understanding the needs, wishes, and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people is essential to those providing them with support and care as they grow older. This book demonstrates how biographical approaches can increase understanding about the distinct experiences and perspectives of older LGBT people. Chapters explore how life story work can offer insights into their expectations and fears surrounding care and service provision, and how issues such as past criminalization, HIV and discrimination have had an impact on their lives and perspectives. The book also explores how to respond to the needs of older LGBT service users, drawing on the examples of projects that have built community networks and helped with service provision.

Reflections on the Life Histories of Today's LGBQ Postsecondary Students  / James L. Olive.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 9 (2012) 3 (july-sep), p. 247-265
source: Journal of LGBT Youth year: 9 (2012) 3 (july-sep), p. 247-265
resume: This qualitative multiple-case study utilized a life history methodology in which written and oral narratives were obtained from six postsecondary students who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or queer (LGBQ). Through the construction of life histories, the researcher endeavored to understand how past experiences and behaviors shaped the participants? identity and established their sense of resiliency. The researcher's analysis of the data revealed discrepancies between the participants? stories and commonly cited sexual-identity development models. In addition, some of the participants expressed resistance to sexual categories or labels and suggested that a shift has occurred in the dynamics between gay and straight males. Correlations to past research and possible implications to sexual-identity development theory, forms of masculinity, and perpetuation of LGBQ art, literature, and history are discussed. Reading the potential of Jackie Kay?s Trumpet for transgender ethics  / Lotta Kähkönen.

Lambda Nordica, 18 (2013) 3-4, p. 123-143
source: Lambda Nordica year: 18 (2013) 3-4 , p. 123-143
resume: Transgender life stories challenge the dominant epistemological understanding of a human as a gendered and sexual being. At the same time, these stories can, by contributing new and important insights, deepen our knowledge of gender. This article illustrates the relationship between storytelling and ethics, and shows how the narrations on trans subjects may offer an ethical potential for studies of gender-coded life complexities. It has been inspired by Elizabeth Groszs thoughts about art's creative ability to transform the material from the past to the resources for the future. It does a reading of Jackie Kay's novel Trumpet (1998), inspired by the American jazz musician Billy Tipton's (1914-1989) life. Tipton lived his life as a man, but after his death it was discovered that he was of the female sex. Kay's fictional description exceeds the previous stories of Tipton and transgender people in many ways. It is discussed how the use of certain narrative techniques of the novel creates an ethical potential and invites us to think beyond how we understand gendered embodiment. It's argued that Kay's novel offers a starting point for a trans-ethics, which includes a readiness to accept diversity and variety, with its various forms of expression, functions and relationships.
