A Paradise for LGBT Rights? : The Paradox of Belgium  / Bart Eeckhout, David Paternotte.

Journal of Homosexuality, 58 (2011) 8 (sep), p. 1058-1084
source: Journal of Homosexuality year: 58 (2011) 8 (sep), p. 1058-1084
resume: How is it that a small country such as Belgium, with its reputation of relative conservatism, has jumped to the forefront of LGBT-friendly nations when it comes to the extension of rights to, and implementation of government policies for, its LGBT population? The analysis offered here focuses on a combination of six causes: the impact of wider secularization processes; the political history and culture of the country; the organization of especially the Flemish LGBT movement and reasons for its political effectiveness; mainstream social trends in national scapegoating hierarchies; the overall media environment; and the window of opportunity opened by the political landslide of 1999. LGBT Activism and the Making of Europe : A Rainbow Europe?  /

ed. by Phillip Ayoub and David Paternotte.Houndmills [etc.]: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014 - xv, 245 p.: ill.
edition: Houndmills [etc.]: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014 - xv, 245 p.: ill.

resume: Europe has long been regarded as a unique place for the promotion and furthering of LGBT rights. This important and compelling study investigates the alleged uniqueness and its ties to a relatively long history of LGBT and queer movements in the region. Contributors argue that LGBT movements were inspired by specific ideas about European democratic values and a responsibility towards human rights, and that they sought to realize these on the ground through activism, often crossing borders to foster a wider movement. In making this argument, they discuss the 'idea of Europe' as it relates to LGBT rights, the history of European LGBT movements, the role of European institutions in adopting LGBT policies, and the construction of European 'others' in this process.

The International (Lesbian and) Gay Association and the question of pedophilia: Tracking the demise of gay liberation ideals  / David Paternotte.

Sexualities, 17 (2014) 1/2 (jan), p. 121-138
source: Sexualities year: 17 (2014) 1/2 (jan), p. 121-138
resume: In 1993-1994, the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) lost its observer status in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) because US conservative groups publicised the membership of two pedophile groups. This article examines debates on pedophilia within ILGA before this event, and documents the slow decline of pro-pedophilia stances. It relates them to wider debates on gay liberation, and argues that pro-pedophilia arguments lost most of their appeal when new ways of imagining homosexual emancipation and new political goals emerged. Beyond the issue of intergenerational sex, it shows these debates were also about the kind of movement activists wanted to build together.

Pedophilia, homosexality and gay and lesbian activism  / David Paternotte.

source:
resume: Pedophilia is undoubtedly one of the main contemporary sexual taboos and a broadly condemned form of sexual activity. Although pedophilia has never been widely encouraged or accepted, the societal taboo was definitively less pervasive in recent history. As will be shown here, the era of sexual revolution was a very specific period for debates regarding pedophilia. Pedophiles made themselves publicly known and attempted to set up special-interest organisations. Other groups, particularly within gay communities, endorsed part of their claims and defended the need for solidarity between sexual minorities. This chapter serves as an attempt to better understand this intriguing moment in the history of sexuality. The goal is to overcome normative discussions surrounding the extent of sexual liberation by shifting the debate towards an investigation of sexual change. Therefore, neither the moral validity of pedophile relations nor the impact of sexual activity of adults with children will be discussed. This analysis highlights past discussions on pedophilia within gay groups, the various failed attempts to seriously politicise the issue, and speculates about the reasons for the disappearance of the controversies.

Unpacking the Sin of Gender  / Sarah Bracke and David Paternotte

Religion & Gender, 6 (2016) 2, p. 143-154
source: Religion & Gender year: 6 (2016) 2 , p. 143-154
resume: Introduction into many different aspects of ?gender ideology? discussed in the four articles gathered in this special issue. Most come from the Habemus Gender! conference, organized at the Université libre de Bruxelles in May 2014.6 Mary Anne Case and Eric Fassin delivered keynote speeches at this event, and Sara Garbagnoli presented in one of the panels. The fourth article, by Mario Pecheny, Daniel Jones, and Lucía Ariza, was solicited for this volume, in order to include an analysis from the national and political context that has shaped the first Pope from the Global South. The first article, by Mary Anne Case, offers a genealogy of the theological origins of ?gender ideology?, starting with Pius XII. The second article, by Eric Fassin, offers a reading of recent gender debates in France in the light of the controversy between ?essentialists? and ?constructionists? in gay and lesbian studies, which itself relies on an older controversy between realists and nominalists. In her contribution, Sara Garbagnoli compares the French and Italian debates on ?gender ideology?. Finally, Mario Pecheny, Daniel Jones, and Lucía Ariza discuss how religion and sexual politics intersect in the Argentinian political landscape. These four articles are followed by an interview with Mgr Krzysztof Olaf Charamsa, a former member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who reflects on how questions of gender and sexuality are approached within the Vatican. Last but not least, we have asked a range of scholars within the fields of gender studies and religious studies, and their intersections, to write brief commentaries on the various insights into the rise of ?gender ideology? that emerge from this volume. - Gender and Meaning in a Postmodern World: An Elusive Quest for Truth / Tina Beattie. - p. 247-250. - Moral Panic and Gender Ideology in Latin America / Gloria Careaga-Pérez. - p. 251-255. - ?Theologies? and Contexts in a Latin American perspective / Sonia Corrêa. - p. 256-263. - Unreal: Catholic Ideology as Epistemological War / Elsa Dorlin. -p. 264-267. - ?Gender Ideology?: Weak Concepts, Powerful Politics / Agnieszka Graff. - p. 268-272. - Catholic Gender Denial / Mary Hunt. - p. 273-275. - Vetera novis augere: Notes on the Rhetoric of Response / Mark Jordan. - p. 276-281. - The Vatican Anti-Gender Theory and Sexual Politics: An African Response / Kapya Kaoma. - p. 282-292. - The Vatican and the Birth of Anti-Gender Studies / Elzbieta Korolczuk. - p. 293-296. - How are Anti-Gender Movements Changing Gender Studies as a Profession? Andrea Peto. - p. 297-299. - Gender and the Vatican / Joan W. Scott. - p. 300-301. - Francis and ?Gender Ideology?: Heritage, Displacement and Continuities / Juan Marco Vaggione. - p. 302-307. The Sin of Turning Away from Reality : An Interview with Father Krzysztof Charamsa  / David Paternotte, Mary Anne Case and Sarah Bracke.

Religion & Gender, 6 (2016) 2, p. 226-246
source: Religion & Gender year: 6 (2016) 2 , p. 226-246
resume: The Polish ecclesiastic Krzysztof Olaf Charamsa is a former member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the former second secretary of the International Theological Commission. Until 2015, he was a professor at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum and Pontifical Gregorian University. He has published widely on theological issues, including in-depth discussions of the work of Saint Thomas Aquinas and Pope Benedict XVI. In 2015, Mgr Charamsa made global headlines after he came out, together with his partner Eduard Planas, on the eve of the second Synod on the Family. He lost his job and was almost immediately suspended from priesthood. Since then, he has been an outspoken critic of Catholic conservatism on issues related to women?s and LGBTIQ rights, and has advocated for the need of the Church to amend its teachings. He recently published his recollections of his life at the Vatican (La Prima Pietra. Milan: Rizzoli, 2016) and keeps a website (www. kcharamsa.com) to share his activities. This interview was prepared by all authors and carried out by Mary Anne Case and David Paternotte in February 2016 in Barcelona. A much longer transcript of the actual conversation was subsequently edited by the authors and the interviewee. The interview includes an appendix with references to the main documents and institutional bodies mentioned in the text.

Anti-Gender Campaigns in Europe : Mobilizing against Equality  /

Ed. by Roman Kuhar and David Paternotte.London [etc.]: Rowman and Littlefield, 2017 - x, 292 p.
edition: London [etc.]: Rowman and Littlefield, 2017 - x, 292 p.
subjects:
resume: After decades of steady progress in terms of gender and sexual rights, several parts of Europe are facing new waves of resistance to a so-called 'gender ideology' or 'gender theory'. Opposition to progressive gender equality is manifested in challenges to marriage equality, abortion, reproductive technologies, gender mainstreaming, sex education, sexual liberalism, transgender rights, antidiscrimination policies and even to the notion of gender itself. This book examines how an academic concept of gender, when translated by religious organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church, can become a mobilizing tool for, and the target of, social movements. How can we explain religious discourses about sex difference turning intro massive street demonstrations? How do forms of organization and protest travel across borders? Who are the actors behind these movements? This collection is a transnational and comparative attempt to better understand anti-gender mobilizations in Europe. It focuses on national manifestations in eleven European countries, including Russia, from massive street protests to forms of resistance such as email bombarding and street vigils. It examines the intersection of religious politics with rising populism and nationalistic anxieties in contemporary Europe.
