resume: In their performance Timelining, Brennan Gerard and Ryan Kelly explore the ways in which intimate relationships are constituted in time. The performance consists of a memory game in which two performers retrace their shared history as a couple. Throughout the performance, the various actions prompted by the memory game question the unity of the couple, instead casting the performers' relationship as what I will call a two-togetherness. This article looks at Timelining through the lens of queer temporality to scrutinize the operations of different social experiences of time in the constitution of the couple as a twotogetherness. It then interrogates, investigates, and explores the ways in which the performance undermines normative assumptions about the constitution of intimate relationships within time. By breaking down categories of time and memory, Gerard and Kelly suggest that each intimate relationship, whether normative or queer, is constituted through the impossibility of conforming to normative conceptions of time.

Perverted by Literature : Rethinking Sexual Identity in the Works of James Purdy  / Looi van Kessel.

resume: James Prudy's novel "Eustace Chisholm and the Works" (1967) challenges the notion that sexualty is part of an identity that is interior to one's self. Central to this argument is a brief scene from the novel in which the sexual identity of one of the characters, Amos Ratcliffe, is narrated as an Oedipal fantasy of patricide and incest. Read through the lens of melodrama this article suggests that the novel, and this scene in particular, exposes sexual identity als an exteriority that is projected onto a person by his or her environment. This constitution of sexual identity is enforced through the confession, which is central to both the Oedipal scenario and melodrama. Melodrama, however, problematizes the psychoanalytic confession to an interior truth that is subsequently assumed as sexual identity, for it foregrounds the exteriority onto which the truth-claim of the confession is based. As such, reading "Eustace Chisholm" through the lens of melodrama opens up a way to think about sexuality without taking recourse to identity.

Deafies in drag : Role models at the intersection of queer and deaf representation  / Nynke Feenstra, Looi van Kessel.

resume: In this article, Nynke Feenstra and Looi van Kessel think through the challenges of putting intersectional theory in practice by tracing a history of role models at the intersection of deaf and LGBTQ+ identifications in the Netherlands and the United States. They argue that, while the concept of intersectionality has taken great leaps in academic debates, formal institutions still sometimes struggle with the practical applications of insights that this concept offers. By looking into the history of Dutch activists such as Bea Visser and advocacy groups such as Roze Gebaar, and the current work of the deaf drag performers Deafies in Drag, Feenstra and van Kessel argue that a more practical attention to the intersection of minoritizing identifications foregrounds tensions and issues that arise from within the deaf and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as from without. The practice of drawing attention to intersecting minoritizing identifications can be found in the function of role models who identify across different marginalized communities, and thus can help work towards forms of activism that pay attention to specific issue advocacy as well as inclusivity.

resume: This year's pride season marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event that, while not the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement in the United States, should at least be viewed as one of the first major milestones in the movement's history. In the Netherlands, too, the history of LGBT activism has been commemorated in the recent exhibition 'With Pride', organised by IHLIA LGBT Heritage (see the review by Michiel Odijk in this issue). After its first successful run at the Amsterdam Public Library, the exhibition toured the Netherlands and opened in Utrecht during its annual pride festivities on June. While praised for its thorough documentation of 40 years of Dutch queer resistance, there was also critique. A number of activists and scholars pointed to a lack of inclusivity and representation, which they argued compromised the exhibition's validity. Wigbertson Julian Isenia and Naomie Pieter, founders of Black Queer and Trans Resistance Netherlands (BQTRNL) and Black Queer Archive, represent two of these critical voices and address the structural exclusion of queers of colour in history writing and archival practices in their work. Julian co-edited the previous issue of Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies (vol. 22(2): 'Sexual Politics Between the Netherlands and the Caribbean: Imperial Entanglements and Archival Desire' and, together with Gianmaria Colpani, Julian and Naomie organised the roundtable 'Archiving Queer of Colour Politics in the Netherlands' (Colpani, Isenia, & Pieter, 2019). In response to the IHLIA exhibition, they proposed an exhibition under the title Nos Tei (Papiamentu/o for 'We are here' or 'We exist'), which is to serve as an addition to the original 'With Pride' exhibition and ran independently from 11 July until 4 September. 2019. We were very happy that both agreed to an interview for this thematic issue on 'narratives of LGBT history in the Netherlands' to discuss their views on archival practices and the exclusion of queer of colour perspectives from mainstream exhibition and archival spaces.

resume: In Savage Embraces: James Purdy, Melodrama, and the Narration of Identity, Looi van Kessel explores the ways in which the early works of the American author James Purdy undermine the notion of a stable and true identity. Writing in the 1950s and 60s, a time in which identity politics enjoyed increased purchase in the United States, Purdy imagines characters who feel the urge to act out their sexual desires without having to conform to oppressive identity categories. In so doing, Purdy is searching for a language that shows how identity is produced through narration. To tease out this language, Looi approaches Purdy's writing through the mode of melodrama - a mode that focuses on the aesthetic dramatization of tensions in the plot - while also bringing his work in conversation with current queer thinking. Ultimately, this dissertation attempts to bring the disparate fields of narrative theory and queer theory in a meaningful relation with one another.

Cruising the seventies : homoseksualiteit en promiscuïteit in de Amerikaanse literatuur van en over de jaren zeventig  / Looi van Kessel.

resume: De debuutroman 63: Dream Palace (1956) van de Amerikaanse schrijver James Purdy opent met een passage waarin de interne verteller, Parkhearst Cratty, het hoofdpersonage Fenton Riddleway ontmoet. Ze komen elkaar tegen in een park in nachtelijk Chicago, waar Parkhearst op zoek is naar "interessante figuren". Fenton lijkt bij hun ontmoeting wat onrustig. Hij vraagt of Parkhearst hem naar een specifiek adres kan brengen; hij is nieuw in de staden het lukt hem niet om dit adres te vinden. Parkhearst lijkt aanvankelijk wantrouwig en merkt op dat er een bobbel zit in de voorkant van Fentons broek. Hij maakt een wat onhandige grap dat het net lijkt alsof Fenton een pistool in zijn broek draagt en vooral op moet passen zichzelf niet in de voet te schieten, maar uiteindelijk besluit hij toch met Fenton mee te gaan. Iets later in de roman treft de lezer Fenton aan op een van zijn nachtelijke dwalingen door de stad. Hij stopt bij een filmtheater dat de hele nacht voorstellingen vertoont en besluit naar binnen te gaan. In het halfduister van de bioscoopzaal ziet hij dat her en der mannen hun hoofd draaien om hem te kunnen observeren, en zo nu en dan reikt er een hand naar hem uit. Hij neemt plaatst in een van de stoelen, waar hij in slaap valt. Wanneer hij wakker wordt, merkt hij dat het alweer zes uur in de ochtend is en gaat hij weer weg. Op weg naar de uitgang valt zijn blik op een advertentie die hij eerder ergens had opgeraapt. Daarop staat in grote belettering "MEN MEN MEN". Deze twee scenes beslaan slechts een klein deel van Purdy's roman. Toch zijn juist deze scenes kenmerkend voor een literair thema dat in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw in tandem met de homorechtenbeweging opkwam in de Verenigde Staten, en waar in de laatste decennia steeds meer academische interesse voor is ontstaan: het thema cruising. Publieke en anonieme seks tussen mannen is van alle tijden. Het was echter in de jaren zeventig dat de anonieme sekscultuur een belangrijke publieke en politieke rol ging spelen in de vorming van de jonge homorechtenbeweging. De samenkomst van snelle ontwikkelingen in de homo-emancipatie en het losser worden van wetgeving rondom pornografie zorgden ervoor dat in deze periode onder homomannen een seksuele subcultuur ontstond waarin promiscuë en anonieme seks een belangrijke rol speelde. Deze cultuur verplaatste zich gaandeweg de jaren zeventig van een marginale subcultuur naar de mainstream door de populariteit van uitgaansgelegenheden met darkrooms en sekssauna's. Toch blijft deze korte periode van een relatief vrije en experimentele sekscultuur een belangrijk moment in de geschiedenis van homoseksualiteit in de Verenigde Staten; een moment waarin een belangrijke collectieve identiteit en politieke strategie binnen de homogemeenschap gevormd werd. In dit artikel bespreek ik enkele contemporaine en hedendaagse literaire en academische werken die de sekscultuur van de jaren zeventig dramatiseren. Hiermee probeer ik een lijn te trekken tussen literaire en culturele productie van de jaren zeventig en nu. Daarnaast traceer ik de vorming van een collectieve homoseksuele identiteit die, naast haar politieke impact, ook zeer controversieel is.
