Als een ster in opspraak was geraakt kon de studio het contract annuleren. Als het echter een kasmagneet betrof betaalde men soms de politie om de zaak in de doofpot te krijgen. In de vijftiger jaren stond Hollywood op z'n kop toen het roddelblad Confidential verscheen om het privéleven van sterren bloot te leggen. Veel stoere, knappe idolen waarover vrouwen droomden, bleken homo- of biseksueel te zijn. Hun seksuele geaardheid zou het einde van hun carrière kunnen betekenen. Velen gingen daarom surrogaathuwelijken aan terwijl anderen er aan ten onder gingen.
